Throughout December 2019, the film Atas Nama Percaya (In the Name of Belief)has been screened and discussed in more than 50 events; in schools, campuses, cafes, pesantren, churches, etc. It shows a brief history of how Indonesia’s indigenous religions, with their various terms such as aliran kepercayaan, kebatinan, or agama leluhur, faced discrimination and persecution but have now slowly secured better legal recognition from the state. It focuses on two indigenous religion, namely Perjalanan in West Java dan Marapu in East Nusa Tenggara.
Atas Nama Percaya is the first film of the Indonesian Pluralities documentary series, a collaborative project between CRCS UGM, the Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, and the Watchdoc Documentary, with the generous support from the Henry Luce Foundation. The second film is about Christian-Muslim relations in a post-conflict area of Ambon and will be launched in mid-January 2020.
