Greetings, Friends! Farewell 2019 & Hello 2020!
I know! I Know! You go for months not hearing anything from me and then suddenly there are three in a row! I must not be gardening!
This is just a very quick note to let you know we have a new blog post up at Barbolian Fields:
Sense of Place.
There is a reason for this entry in closing out the year: it is written in fond memory of our dog, Barkley, who passed away earlier this month after 14 years as Head Guardian of our homestead.
I got to thinking about all the things our many dogs have taught me. This dog, an Australian Shepherd, was truly my most devoted dog and was always at my side. He had a profound sense of place and took on the great responsibility of protecting our home against all foes, real and imaginary. It was a job he took quite seriously, and he did it well. We miss him greatly.
It struck me that our sense of place is an expression of this connection - it becomes an extension of who we are, our personal truths, if you will.
When we connect, we care; and when we care, we protect.
When our sense of place is extended to the planet, it is not hard to see what we must do.

We are looking forward to the New Year. So many opportunities ahead for making the world a gentler place.
