The Post-Christmas Slump

Joseph, Mary, and baby Jesus fleeing to Egypt (Matthew 2:13–23)

With Christmas in the rear-view mirror, we now find ourselves in the season after Christmas. Everything we do is affected by the birth of Jesus Christ on that night over 2,000 years ago. It's not that Christmas is over. Rather, Christmas continues in all the ways we come to the manger to worship and follow this child who was born for our salvation.

Do you feel any different? What has changed in your life now that the one we have been waiting for has arrived?

If you're like Mary and Joseph, desperately trying to protect their child on the hard journey to Egypt, Christmas has made things more difficult and more complicated.

Are we willing to continue on the journey with them anyway? Or would we rather turn back?

Listen to this week's sermon from Outreach Director Joel Peterson as you take time to continue the Christmas journey this week.

Dig Deeper!

Already listen to this week's sermon? Take a moment to read more about our Scripture text for this week.

Find yourself in the story: What "Bethlehem" have you come from? Where is the "Egypt" where you're finding temporary safety? And where is the "Nazareth" to which God is leading you?

Scriptures for further reading:
  • Skim through the story of the Exodus. How hard is the promised deliverance for God's people from Egypt? What trials will you endure through your deliverance from the powers of sin and death.
  • Read Revelation 12, which describes the story of Jesus' birth at the cosmic level of the battle between Heaven and Hell. How is this battle waging in your own life?

Our leadership created a new mission statement at this year's retreat: "Going in Service, Growing in Faith."

What does that mean for you? If you remember, we once encouraged everyone to do one thing to serve in our ministries. Well now we're encouraging everyone to take on two things for the new year.
  1. Thing One: Go in Service. Do something to support a ministry in the church through your time and talents.
  2. Thing Two: Grow in Faith. Join or continue in a small group that will help you draw closer to God.
Building & Grounds Updates

Our mission to go and grow doesn't stop with our personal commitments. We are working together as a church to continue to grow to meet the needs of our members and all who participate in our ministries.

The work crew has been hard at work on the second handicap accessible bathroom for the Gathering Place area. Please pardon the mess and use the temporary unisex bathroom upstairs or one of the downstairs restrooms. Make sure you thank our work crew for all their hard work serving the Kingdom!

"In the Beginning"

John 1 (NIV)

The Word Became Flesh

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
...
The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
