Pancakes

JANUARY 2020

People often ask us how we were lead to the mission field here on Manitoulin Island. My answer is "Pancakes!" It is really cool to see how God uses the simple things in life to bring us closer to Him and to others. It started ten years ago, in Kitchener and having my quiet talks with God as I flipped the pancakes for our dinner. In those quiet times, God shared with me how He was going to use me and my pancake flipping skills to support His ministry. I went to Ray of Hope (an outreach ministry in Kitchener) one morning and was asked to make pancakes. As I was flipping pancakes God clearly let me know that even though I was only making pancakes for lots of people this was not where He was going to ultimately use me! In 2011 we were lead to the island for the first time and at Easter of 2012 we returned where God confirmed through making pancakes that we were in the right spot. On that Sunday morning Wiky Fellowship was having an Easter breakfast and we arrived early for church to see where we could help out. Again, I was asked to make the pancakes!! I still remember the tears coming down my face as I made and served them. Fast forward to December 2019 and I found myself again flipping pancakes!! This time at 6:30AM for a grade 3 class and their parents at a Christmas party at Lakeview Public School. I have been volunteering in the SK class. It has been a blessing to see a need and fill it. The Grade 3 teacher had made a comment a few weeks before that she never gets any volunteers to help make breakfast. I told her I’d come and help. She was really surprised that I would offer and even more surprised when I appeared. At this point I hadn’t worked with her in her class and we were basically strangers to each other. I could sense her gratitude and I feel that my simple gesture to help will open doors and allow for future inroads. Every day we are given opportunities to share our God-given talents with those around us. We each have an choice to either pass by or roll up our sleeves and start "flippin' pancakes".

God has been using Anthony and I in very practical ways this past decade! In the past, the native community has been betrayed by "outsiders" who arrive, stay for awhile and then return to the comforts offered in larger cities. It has taken a long time to build the trust of the community and the Lord's faithfulness can be seen as we follow His leading. It is now clear that the longer we remain committed to His ministry, the more obvious His rewards are displayed. How has God been speaking to you?  We'd love to hear your stories!

TURKEYS and CHRISTMAS GIFTS

We were able to bless so many families this past Christmas with the help from you!! Thank you Vaughn for donating over 40 turkeys and Allan for arranging delivery!! Thank you Community Christian Reform for blessing 50 kids with Christmas gifts. Also to the many people who donated hats and mitts to keep the kids warm this winter. It is much appreciated, I can see a real change in the kids who previously had come to school with no mitts or hats and now can play during recess rather than just stuff their hands in their jacket pockets

Anthony had the opportunity to help out at the in the M'Chigeeng New Year’s Day pow wow. He ended up organizing and cooking a feast for 150 people. Again, another opportunity to show God's Love in a practical way..
Finally, this past year has been one of real change, in our service here on the Island.  We have felt God leading us in our new community with new challenges and new opportunities for outreach. We have felt the peace of the Lord as we have been stretched and conformed to His Will.

Thank you for your continued prayers and support.
