bedtime stories
Reads when you're up late anyway. Here are tonight's round-up for every occasion:
TRENDING For when the perfect brew is in your price range ~ No need to be a coffee connoisseur in order to enjoy a well-brewed cup. A team of researchers have found a way to brew a consistently good shot of espresso that's easy on your wallet and the environment. "The team has already implemented [their] process in a small U.S. coffee shop for one year, which reported saving thousands of dollars on coffee beans alone. Researchers estimate that if the entire U.S. coffee market were to implement this new process, they could save over $1.1 billion per year. In short, this new way to brew is more consistent, tastes better, and uses fewer beans — leading to cheaper costs for coffee shops and less waste."
SELF For when you get emotional ~ Hey, we've all been there. Having a good cry or holding back tears at work doesn't make you weak, it makes you human. "What I quickly learned is that crying at work is almost its own emotion — with distinct rules, norms, and idiosyncrasies. Below I’ve organized my research for your perusal. It covers where people are crying, from freezers to classrooms; who is crying — do men cry as much as women?; why we’re crying; and interestingly, how to cry at work with more panache (a skill I now possess) ... It’s also proof that the rules of professional engagement aren’t leaving enough room for our humanity."
WELLNESS For when you got that Benjamin Button thing going on ~ K-beauty is a beautiful and wonderful thing, but it's also next level when it comes to how seriously it takes having smooth, supple, and ageless skin. "In Korea, skincare is not seen as a vanity thing, it’s not seen as a high-maintenance thing. It’s seen as a way to take care of yourself. In the US, someone who stocks her bathroom with dozens of products might be considered superficial or obsessed with her looks. But in Korea, having a nonexistent skincare routine would be like eating fast food for every meal and avoiding exercise entirely ... According to Koreans, skincare shouldn’t be seen as some sort of elective chore. Instead, it should be a natural next step in one’s journey toward self-care."
SLEEP For when your routine is the problem ~ We're deep into the journey that is crafting the perfect bedtime routine. However, unless you can create realistic goals that fit into your lifestyle, it's never gonna work. "In the hours leading up to my bedtime, I was fully living out the 'treat yo’ self,' 'girl, you deserve this' mentality. While I will be the first one to say that yes, girls, we deserve all the lovely things in life, a constant diet of that mindset can actually be quite damaging and lead to self-sabotage (i.e. I’m already not going to make it to bed on time, so what’s one more episode?) ... So while I may have 'failed' my bedtime routine, it taught me an even bigger lesson. Sleep — any type of self-care for that matter — should be less about following a list of rules and more about treating my mind and my body with the love and care it deserves."
