:: SPOTLIGHT ON ::
John Hartman, Photographer

Today we meet John Hartman, photographer at
Contemporary Photography.

Website: johnhartmanlightpainting.com and johnhartmanseniors.com

Q :: Describe the art you create in five adjectives.
JH :: Unique. Honest. Time-honored. Fun. Wall-worthy.
Q :: What is your background/how did you get into making art?
JH :: I took a photography class in my senior year at SPASH and never looked back.
Q :: Who or what are your biggest influences?
JH :: I have photographic mentors, but Earl Nightingale was an early influence that changed my direction.
Q :: What do you like best about being an artist?
JH :: I like the idea of creating something that will outlast me.
Q :: Do you make art full-time or do you have any other pursuits?
JH :: I've been a full-time professional photographer since 1974.
Q :: What materials do you create with or what new materials/styles are you most excited about?
JH :: Much of my work is now printed on high-gloss aluminum, which is a relatively new medium for photography.
Q :: What themes/motifs recur in your work?
JH :: The Latin translation of photography is 'drawing with light.' I'm a student of light, and almost all of my work is created with artificial light, rather than relying on natural light.
Q :: What is your favorite part of the process of creating?
JH :: I enjoy every aspect from the planning, the execution, the editing, the printing and the exhibiting of the final piece.
Q :: Where do you make your art? Do you have a dedicated studio/workshop space?
JH :: Most photographers today, even those who bill themselves as professionals, do not have a studio space. When I first started, the studio was THE place where art was made, and that still stands true today. Although I love to work on location, my best work happens in the studio.
Q :: What is the best piece of advice you have received that influenced your life in art?
JH :: "Find out what everyone else is doing and then don't do it."
Q :: Is there anything you are currently working on, or are excited about starting that you can tell us about?
JH :: I'm just completing a gallery show of images created of wildlife while on a recent photo safari in Botswana, Africa.

Be sure to stop in to see these gorgeous images up close and be transported to Botswana, Africa in this brand new exhibit opening January 7th with an opening reception on Friday, January 10th, 5-7PM. And if you are interested in more, John will be hosting a presentation on his trip for our Second Saturday on Saturday, January 11th, 1-2:00PM.
"We are at our very best, and we are happiest,
when we are fully engaged in work we enjoy on the journey toward the goal we've established for ourselves. It gives meaning to our time off and comfort to our sleep. It makes everything else in life so wonderful, so worthwhile."

~ Earl Nightingale

:: GETTING TO KNOW YOU ::
Trudy Pederson, Volunteer

Did you know that we have volunteers at Gallery Q?
We have been so lucky over the past few years to welcome some special Friends of Gallery Q who have shown interest in volunteering in various ways and every one of our artist-members is truly grateful for their presence. Today, we would like to introduce you to one of our volunteers, Trudy Pederson, who is a constant friendly face behind the desk at Q when you come to visit.

Being the oldest of 10 children didn’t afford me the opportunity to attend college the “normal” way, but in 1975 after marriage and two children, our family moved to Stevens Point so I could attend UWSP and finish my degree in Interior Design. We were not born and raised “townies”, but consider ourselves true Pointers.

Years ago Kristie Cecil asked if I would consider volunteering at Gallery Q. I had recently retired from my job, my husband and I were empty-nesters and although we were involved in several organizations in the community, I needed a creative outlet. This was a perfect fit.

I greatly enjoy my volunteer time at Q among all the beautiful artwork and am continually amazed at the quality and variety on display for each show. I marvel at the member artists’ creativity and innovation. My husband and I recently finished our labor of love, restoring and refurbishing our 1880’s log home, so I especially appreciate that the gallery is housed in a 1914 historical downtown building. I love the creaky wooden floors, the antique light fixtures, the high tin ceiling and the recent renovation that opened up and spruced up the front of the building.

I value everything about my relationship with Gallery Q including the welcoming, appreciative artists; many who I consider friends.

(Photo above is Trudy's entry into the Art Bloom @ Q exhibit in 2018, a collaboration between Gallery Q and the Master Gardeners. Watch for that event coming in July 2020!)
