Significant Incidents

Garage Burglaries

In the past several weeks we have seen a couple of burglaries from garages in the Atkin's Park section of Virginia-Highland. One on St. Charles Place and one on St. Augustine Place. Items taken included a pressure washer and leaf blower from both homes and a bicycle from one. These are all items that would easily be sold on Craig's list or pawned. APD has reports on both incidents and the Virginia-Highland Security Patrol is watching to see if there is a pattern that might help catch this thief. In the meantime, if you have a way to secure your garage or shed, please do so. Also, make a record of the serial numbers from high ticket tools and equipment. These can be used by police to identify and return stolen items. Finally, if you have any video footage that shows someone snooping around your property, please share it with APD via email zone6cid@atlantaga.gov.

Terry Noble Update
Mr. Noble who was charged with burglary, armed robbery, home invasion, kidnapping and other offenses here in the neighborhood in August, 2019 remains in jail. His case has been scheduled for trial beginning on January 30, 2020. However, according to his public defense attorney at a pre-trial hearing today, he may take a plea deal. The terms of the offer from the state are not known at this time. Updates will be provided as they become available.

Citizen's Police Academy

APD's Citizen's Police Academy is accepting  applications for the next session which begins on February 4th and will be held for eight weeks each Tuesday from 6-9 pm. Classes will be held at Public Safety Headquarters downtown. Applications are due by January 17th. Several residents have participated in this training including John Wolfinger and Kay Stephenson. Please give us a shout if you have questions. Here is a link to a news story about the program, and you can find more information at these links: Info Sheet, Flyer, Application

Quick Notes

  • Bonaventure
  • Briarcliff Court
  • Briarcliff Terrace
  • Frederica - 733 and 741

  • Los Angeles - N. Highland to N. Virginia
  • Park Drive - West of Monroe
  • Virginia - N. Highland to Briarcliff
New Neighborhood Watch Coordinator
After many years of service Eleanor Barrineau is stepping down as coordinator of our neighborhood watch program. We all thank her for all of her time and efforts in the community. Deborah Schwartz (street captain for Drewry) who many of you know, has volunteered to take over this important job. Deborah and Eleanor will be working out the details of the transition, but expect to be hearing from Deborah in the coming months.

New VHCA Safety Committee Chair
As some of you know Troy Murray and Kay Stephenson have stepped down as safety committee co-chairs for the Virginia-Highland Civic Association. We are happy to announce that Andy Sutton (Virginia Avenue) has agreed to serve as the new chair. If you are interested in serving on this committee, please send at message to safety@vahi.org.

FBAC is now Virginia-Highland Security Patrol, inc.
During 2019 the patrol incorporated and received 501c3 non-profit status with the IRS. This change will allow the patrol to seek grants and donations to increase the services offered to the community. Those who pay for their membership via paper check should make that out to the Virginia-Highland Security Patrol in the future.

Be aware, that membership payments are not tax deductible as it is payment for a service. However, any charitable donations or sponsorships can be deducted. The new non-profit corporation continues to be managed by volunteers including Beth Marks (welcome back after a several year hiatus), Steve Rosenberg, Nan Safay (retiring this year), Kay Stephenson, Charles Zimmer, and John Wolfinger. Chris Clark, who formed the patrol along with Beth Marks over 25 years ago continues to serve on the board and recruit and manage the officers on patrol. Find more information at the website.

Bluetooth technology and car break-ins
This from our friends in Morningside Lenox Park Association (MLPA):

Bluetooth technology is being used in car break-ins. Bluetooth scanner apps can detect bluetooth signals emitted by laptops or cell phones left out of sight in your car.

So what can you do to keep your stuff safe? Put the device in airplane mode or power it off. Closing the lid on your laptop does not work because some devices still emite trace bluetooth signals while sleeping. You can also use a case or sleeve with an RF shield, OR...

just don't leave stuff in your car.
