The Northern California Nevada Conference of the United Church of Christ seeks to be a community of diverse congregations which nurtures, supports, and unites local churches in faithful covenant in Christ to carry out ministry and mission in the world.
   Lets Talk: Stewarding Abundance
By Associate Conference Minister Daniel Ross-Jones

It may only be 14 days into the year when I sit down to write this article, yet already I think we are all going to be exhausted by ‘clever’ references to 2020 vision by the time we write the book on this first year of the decade. So forgive me as I already continue the metaphor here.

During the 2010s, Christian practice shifted in ways that accelerated many numerous trends that had already been emerging. The rate of change seemed to increase exponentially, and indeed that was the case in a number of areas. The general narrative of decline and its accompanying anxiety is, at this point, widely established – and I choose not to give it further airtime in this space for one major reason: the world doesn’t need an anxious church. The world needs a church that cultivates hope and transforms lives.

I sat in a meeting in the second half of 2019 listening as well-intentioned, good-hearted elders of a congregation in our Conference told me all the things Millennials were looking for in a church as well as all the things their particular congregation had to offer Millennials – including any number of things Millennials ‘don’t know they need.’ I listened as these faithful, anxious elders lamented the ways they felt like their church’s best days were behind them. I heard their fear in the future, the ways in which they circled around and around themes of scarcity in the present. I listened and smiled and nodded along until there was a break in the conversation where I could jump in. Read more here.

Boundary Trainings for Ministers, Youth Workers and Lay Leaders

Our Annual full-day Boundary Training for Authorized Ministers will be held on Friday, April 3, 9 AM to 4 PM. Boundary Training is a requirement once every three years for all authorized ministers in this Conference. Cost is $50, which includes lunch and materials.

Boundary Training for youth workers and camp counselors will be held on Saturday, April 4, 10 AM to 2 PM. This training is required for anyone who wants to serve as a counselor for any of our NCNC camping programs or youth trips. (Authorized Ministers who are up-to-date on Boundary Training are not required to attend.) This training will also support youth workers and youth ministers as we will focus on boundaries when working with youth and young adults.  Cost is $30, which includes lunch and materials. If you have applied and have been accepted as a counselor for this one of our NCNC summer camps or the National Youth Event, the fee is $10 for lunch.

Lay Boundary Training will be offered this year for the first time and is open to anyone.  This training will benefit lay leaders who want to learn about ministerial boundaries observed by their pastor, including boundaries around the ending of  ministry in a local church. We will also address boundary issues that lay people should be aware of to be good stewards and leaders in their congregations. The training will be held on Sunday, April 5, from 2-5 PM.  Cost is $10.  We are considering opening Zoom Rooms in the Sacramento and Fresno areas if there are lay people from those areas interested in attending. Please email Diane Weible at dweible@ncncucc.org if you are interested in attending this training through one of our Zoom Rooms in either Sacramento or Fresno.

All three trainings will be led by The Rev. Al Miles, Lead Chaplain for Pacific Health Ministry serving at The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu, HI. Registration will open as soon as church locations are confirmed, hopefully in next week’s newsletter. For now, however, please mark your calendars and reserve these dates. If you have any questions, contact Diane Weible at dweible@ncncucc.org.

  Let’s Talk About Race!

Last month you may remember that we invited responses to a survey about a project we were proposing for this Conference. The project is a series of courageous and difficult conversations on race as foundational work for this year’s Annual Gathering. Thank you for your responses. From those responses we have developed this program which will be hosted in various locations around the Conference. We will use our NCNC Zoom Rooms to connect with our main facilitator, Rev. Cheryl Ward and with each other. During each session we will go offline for deeper discussions with those who have gathered in our specific location. Each Zoom Room conversation will be facilitated by someone trained by Rev. Ward. The program will be held Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 8:30 from February 13 to March 26 in the following locations:

  • Oakland/Berkeley (location TBD)
  • First Congregational Church Fresno, 5550 N Fresno St., Fresno
  • Pleasant Hill UCC, 404 Gregory Lane, Pleasant Hill
  • First Congregational Church of Redwood City, 230 Twin Dolphin Dr. Ste D, Redwood City
  • We are also hoping to have a group in the Sacramento area so if you are interested in participating in a group in Sacramento, please register and indicate this. We will notify you once that location is confirmed.

There is no cost for this pilot program but you must register. If we do not have enough people signed up for a particular room we may have to cancel that location. If you have questions, please contact Rev. Davena Jones (davena@ncncucc.org)

  Church Parking Lot Tax Repeal

The article regarding the church parking lot tax law that was included in last weeks newsletter was posted in error. The article that should have been posted was to inform churches that on
Dec. 20, 2019 the so-called “Church Parking Lot Tax” was retroactively repealed.  This means that the tax is no longer in effect and if a church did pay any unrelated business income tax (UBIT) on its parking, it can file for a refund. We apologize for the error.

  No War Against Iran

The Trump administration is leading the US straight into another disastrous war in the Middle East. This will likely engulf the whole region and could quickly turn into a global conflict of unpredictable scope with the people of Iraq and Iran suffering the gravest consequences. For all who believe in peace, for all who are opposed to yet another catastrophic war, now is the time to mobilize and take action against US militarism and imperialism.  On Saturday, January 25, join us with cities across the globe, to protest against a new war in the Middle East.
