Thought of the Week

With Thanks to Ezra May

One of the more fascinating episodes in this week's Torah reading is Moshe not giving his son Eliezer a Bris and the Torah explicitly telling us (4:24) that Moshe's wife Tzipporah took a sharp stone to circumcise her son.

One of the strange aspects of this story is that she used a stone and not a knife.

It is explained that until the times of King David, it was customary to circumcise children with rocks, as Tzipporah did. The reason we use metal today is based on a fascinating Midrash, which relates that when David slew Goliath, the rock that he slung wanted to penetrate Goliath's metal armour but knew that it was impossible based on the laws of nature. The Angel of rocks then began negotiating with the Angel of metal and offered him the right to be used for circumcisions from that point on if he would allow David's rock to miraculously penetrate Goliath's metal armour. The Angel of metal agreed, and as a result, Goliath was killed and from that day we circumcise with metal instead of stone.
