“Maybe that's the point of art, to teach you . . . what it is you really care about."
--Dickson Schneider
This is an appropriate quote in so many ways - I chose it, because I've been in the throws of deciding what exactly I think of using digital media to make illustrations. I jotted down this note on an envelope only a few months ago: "[The artist] is not nearly as vulnerable behind digital work. Show some vulnerability please - or its so UNINTERESTING."

And here I am, ipad and digital pencil in hand . . . searching for any possible vulnerability to be found in the technology. And - I'm pleased to report - it is possible to be surprised by this medium! Even so, when I look at what I've made here in this newsletter (most of which was made on the ipad) and then look at that crazy dog I sketched with pencil - there is something about that dog. A wonderful rawness which I can't find with this device. Using it feels like I'm cheating. Everything comes out so polished. But isn't it the content above the medium that is most important? Maybe not when you let the medium decide the content (which is what I tend to do). I'd love to hear your thoughts.

The quote above however is about much more than what you care about within art - it's about discovering your values in life through art. So go forth and look at lots of it!
Ha ha workin out the sketch tools - a very pretty one of Kye and a very ugly one of Kye! Below: some "digital doodles".
And I haven't put any news in yet - I usually tell you at least one interesting thing, don't I? Wish I could say I adopted this dog, but I don't have the space yet :) I've started as the Illustration Liaison for my local SCBWI chapter, which is gratifying. And my art was chosen for their national newsletter! Yay!
And now for my gift! Well I have two. The main one is a little mini bubbie to cut out and set atop your computer or bookshelf or . . . wherever you think she'd be happy (and trust me, she is not happy just anywhere - she'll let you know).*

Underneath that is a fun piece of stationary you can print out on your home printer and write letters on to friends :)

*Print bubbie on thick paper, so she will hold her shape when you fold her (hips and knees) to sit. Use the link below for that, not the image below.
