SPMHA PRESIDENT'S
STATE OF THE ASSOCIATION

It is amazing how much has changed in a year! When I assumed the role of President of SPMHA in May of 2018, my focus was threefold: increase player development, increase coach development and enhance community presence. Since the last State of the Association, we have made many changes with this in mind. First, we had to focus on increasing efficiencies. We made administrative changes by introducing online registration, publishing evaluation guides, adopting the OneClickIce ice allocation software and utilizing the Team Genius software for both player and coach evaluations.

In terms of player development, we partnered with Power Edge Pro, Crease Masters, Serdachny Power Skating, Salto Gymnastics and Tornado’s Edge to offer our players discounted access to training tools and programs. On top of this, we scheduled in-season development sessions available on a weekly basis to all SPMHA members to continue skill development outside of team-scheduled ice times. Registration is still open to end of the season for those who might be interested.

In terms of coach development, we hosted certification clinics at the beginning of the season and continue to host both instructional clinics and coach learning sessions throughout the season. We provided PEP Certification at no cost to our Coaches and access to the equipment at a variety of rinks within the County.

When it comes to our presence in the Community, we have worked hard to schedule community-based events such as our Welcome Back BBQ and our Development Hotstove. We have made strides in partnering with the community when it comes to our Play Your Faceoff tournaments. We have reconnected with the Sherwood Park Crusaders through the creation of the Team of the Month initiative and the Crusaders Ambassador program. Not to mention, the creation of the SPMHA Online Store this year, helping to get our brand out into the community.

While the year has felt like it has been in fifth gear since day one, we have also learned of many more opportunities for growth. The state of the hockey world continues to change and we must be cognizant of this as it applies to our volunteers, players and members. Important issues including mental health, racism, sexism and the treatment of others cannot be ignored. We are working to provide more education on these subjects as it pertains to the hockey environment and to our coaches and volunteers. We are working with external sources to review our Integrity, Conduct and Ethics (ICE) policy to offer fair and appropriate response to unacceptable behavior. We are working with both SPKAC and SPS Fuzion in regards to retaining players within the Association as competition from external options continues to increase. We are working with Strathcona County and the other minor ice user groups to find more efficient and convenient scheduling options within the ice available to our Association. We are working with Hockey Operations to create a vastly improved Summer Camp offering to our members. We are working with our executive to create a development program for goaltenders within our Association. We are already at work trying to offer a less stressful and more efficient process when it comes to player evaluations. These are but a few areas identified and being addressed at the moment within the Executive.

Our mission continues to be to create positive opportunities and experiences for all players through innovative leadership and exceptional service while adhering to our core values of innovation, integrity, consistency, respect, teamwork and providing a safe and fun environment. That cannot be obtained without the buy-in from the membership. So as I said last year, take a deep breath, embrace the rink, say hi to a parent that you don’t chat with often and get as much out of this game as you can.

We’ll see you at the rink!
