Get connected, get snapping and get winning!

Summer is a great time to connect, with your family and friends, your community and the outdoors and chances are you snap a few pics along the way. After you have shared them on social media why not share them with us?

The Health Navigator Connected Photo Competition runs until 29 February 2020 and is a chance for you to show us through photography what being connected means to you.

We aren’t after polished professional shots but are looking for images that show a wide and diverse range of New Zealanders: our communities, our country, our connections.

There are 3 main themes:

  • Connected – tāngata (how you connect with other people)
  • Connected – hauora (how you connect with your health and wellbeing)
  • Connected – tūrangawaewae (a place you are connected to)

The winner of each category will receive a $150 retail voucher.

If you have photos and are ready to enter you can do so here

Make sure you read and understand the terms and conditions. In particular, make sure all photos belong to you and that anyone who can be identified in them has given you permission to use their image.

Once submitted, all copyrights in the photograph and pass this copyright on to the Health Navigator Charitable Trust to use for any purpose.

If you're stuck for ideas see our tips below to help get you started.

But what if I’m not a photographer?

No worries! You don’t have to be a professional to enter this competition. You just need a camera or smartphone and be prepared to have fun and be real – we’re not after airbrushed perfection.

Tips for taking photos:

  • Experiment with taking photographs from different angles – up high looking down or down low looking up.
  • Think about perspective – try moving back so you can see your subject within their environment. Or get up close and personal and really focus in on something like hands or feet.
  • Consider what you like about images that pop up in your social media feed. How can you capture a look and style that reflects you?

I need ideas for the themes!

The themes are to help you create feeling in your images, but don’t get too hung up on them. Here are some tips to help get your creative juices flowing:

Connected – tāngata

Who are the people around you and how are you connected to them? This could be your family/whānau, a friend or colleague or it could be a stranger you barely know. If they’re a little camera shy, that’s all good – we don’t need to see faces to get the feeling of connection. Think about the people you interact with on a daily basis. What do they mean to you and how can you show this in a photograph?

Connected – hauora

What do health and wellbeing mean to you? Perhaps it’s getting out for a walk or run around your local community. Maybe it’s seeing your nurse for a regular health check or taking your pills or inhaler(s) each day. We all have different experiences of health and each of us has our own journey towards wellbeing. How can you express yours in a photo?

Connected – tūrangawaewae

Where is your place to stand? Somewhere you feel connected to and at home. Consider what this place means to you and how you interact with it. What is it about this place that you feel connected to? Can you capture the essence of this in a photo?
