NiRA CONGRATULATES MR. TOPE FASHEDEMI ON HIS APPOINTMENT AS PERMANENT SECRETARY IN THE MINISTRY OF COMMUNICATIONS AND DIGITAL ECONOMY
The Executive Board of Directors and staff of the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA) felicitate with Mr. Tope Fashedemi on his recent appointment as the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy. Recall that Mr. Tope Fashedemi was a director on the Executive Board of NiRA till the end of his tenure in April 2016 and was a pioneer member of the NiRA Board of Executive Directors.

FG INAUGURATES MEMBERS OF THE NATIONAL BROADBAND PLAN (NBP) COMMITTEE

As part of the efforts to foster the growth of Nigeria’s Digital Economy, in line with the re-energized mandate of the Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy, the Honorable Minister, Dr. Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami FNCS, FBCS, FIIM on behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria officially inaugurated the National Broadband Plan Committee for the Development of the 2020-2025 National Broadband Plan for Nigeria.

PROFESSOR MUHAMMED ABUBAKAR RESUMES AS MD/CEO GALAXY BACKBONE
President Muhammed Buhari, GCFR, recently appointed Professor Muhammed Bello Abubakar as the new Managing Director/Chief Executive Of Galaxy Backbone (GBB).  He has since officially resumed and replaces Mr. Yusuf Kazaure who has been at the helm of affairs at Galaxy Backbone for the last five years.
Galaxy Backbone (GBB) is 100% owned by the Federal Government of Nigeria and an agency under the supervision of the Federal Ministry Of Communications and Digital Technology. GBB operates as a limited liability company determined to drive world-class professionalism in its approach to delivering Information Technology and digital services to its customers. GBB is the digital Infrastructure and shared services provider of the Federal Government charged with the responsibility to develop and implement a national network and data infrastructure platform for public and private institutions.

Dr. PANTAMI LAUDS CENTRAL BANK OF NIGERIA’S (CBN) DOWNWARD REVIEW OF ELECTRONIC TRANSFER FEES.
The Honourable Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Ali Ibrahim(Pantami), FNCS, FBCS, FIIM through a press release signed by his spokesperson, Mrs. Uwa Suleiman, hailed the decision of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) for considerably reducing the cost of electronic cash transactions and Automated Teller Machine (ATM) card maintenance fees.

This directive from the Regulator of the financial sector he said, will in no small measure contribute to the actualization of a Digital Economy, as lower service charges will encourage a higher patronage of electronic services, especially in the banking and financial services sector.

NIGERIAN SCHOOL ON INTERNET GOVERNANCE (NSIG) 2020 : CALL FOR APPLICATION

The 2020 edition of the Nigerian School on Internet Governance (NSIG) is scheduled to take place in Abuja, Nigeria. NSIG, convened by the Internet Society (ISOC) Nigeria Chapter, in partnership with other Industry Stakeholders is an effort to build additional Internet Governance capacity within Nigeria.  
NSIG helps interested Students, Academics as well as individuals working in the public and private sector to get comprehensive and structured knowledge on Internet governance. It also helps participants to better understand the complexity related to Internet governance and its importance to the future of the Internet.

NEXTGEN@ICANN68 APPLICATION ROUND IS NOW OPEN
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has launched the application round for those interested in participating in the ICANN68 Public Meeting scheduled to take place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from 22nd June to 25th June 2020. The NextGen@ICANN program is open until 24 January 2020. Successful candidates will be announced on the ICANN website on 24 February 2020.

ICANN AND PTI LEADERSHIP POSITIONS APPLICATION IS OPENED
The Nominating Committee (NomCom) for the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) invites interested individuals to submit applications for key leadership positions within ICANN and Public Technical Identifiers (PTI), an affiliate of ICANN organization.
 
A unique opportunity exists for selected individuals to work with accomplished colleagues from around the globe to help shape the Internet's technical coordination and policy development. The deadline to submit applications is 18 February 2020 at 23:59 Universal Coordinated Time (UTC).
 
The vacant positions are listed as follows:
  • Two members of the ICANN Board of Directors.
  • One member of the PTI Board of Directors.
  • Two regional representatives to the At-Large Advisory Committee (ALAC) – one from the European region and one from the North American region.
  • One member of the Generic Names Supporting Organization (GNSO) Council.
  • One member of the Country Code Names Supporting Organization (ccNSO) Council.

UPCOMING CHANGES TO KIDS CONTENT ON YOUTUBE: HOW THE POLICY CHANGES AFFECT CONTENT CREATORS
YouTube is making changes on how they collect and use data on kids content on YouTube.com. These changes will address concerns raised by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) regarding their compliance under the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).
In the coming months
  • Content creators/users will be required to state if their content is made for kids. YouTube will use machine learning to help identify videos that clearly target young audiences. At a high level, content that is made for kids has an emphasis on Children or children’s characters, Popular children’s programming or animated characters, play-acting, or stories using children’s toys, Child protagonists engaging in common natural play patterns such as play-acting and/or imaginative play popular children’s songs, stories or poems.
