Somehow, Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress just keeps on spinning. The Magic Kingdom attraction is marking its 45th year at the theme park — it’s more of an anniversary than a birthday since it had a previous life in Disneyland and New York before finding its forever home in Florida.

5.  Here are this year's seasonal theme park opening dates

For an "off" season, there's certainly been a lot happening at the nation's theme parks. We've already had the debut of West Coast Racers at Six Flags Magic Mountain this month, and Friday, the world's best theme park ride, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, opens at Disneyland. Next week brings construction tours for new coasters at SeaWorld Orlando and Busch Gardens Williamsburg, as well as the start of seasonal festivals at Knott's Berry Farm and Universal Studios Hollywood.

6.  Baby Yoda doll won’t be sold at new Knott’s Build-A-Bear location

Baby Yoda fans who want a Build-A-Bear stuffed doll version of the adorable alien from “The Mandalorian” on Disney+ won’t be able to find The Child at the new Knott’s Berry Farm bear-building location.

7.  Review: Marc Davis in His Own Words: Imagineering the Disney Theme Parks

8.  SeaWorld San Diego’s rescue team off to a busy start in 2020

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – The rescue team at Sea World San Diego is dealing with a busy start to its year. The team says they’re seeing more and more seals and sea lions needing to be rescued.

9.  Universal Drops Another Hint About Jurassic Park Attraction

ORLANDO, Fla. — It's an open secret that Universal Orlando is working on a new attraction at Islands of Adventure.

10.  Fairytale-themed N.J. park will reportedly re-open this spring

Once upon a time, Fairy Tale Forest in Oak Ridge was a memorable attraction that let children step inside their favorite storybooks.  It closed in 2005 but has been undergoing a renovation since 2018. That work is reportedly nearing completion and the theme park could begin welcoming guests by Memorial Day, according to Northjersey.com.

11.  Innovative mindset takes Iowa State student on the ride of his life

AMES, Iowa — You’ve probably never seen a business card like this before.  It’s 3D-printed and folds into a full-circuit model of a miniature roller coaster, pointing to the passion of its creator: Charlie Wickham, senior in mechanical engineering at Iowa State University.

12.  Roller-coaster rider sues Great Adventure over bamboo accident

CAMDEN - A lawsuit filed against Six Flags Great Adventure contends the amusement park is responsible for a gruesome injury suffered by a patron after a roller-coaster ride.

13.  Remembering Bob Matheison

The longtime Windermere resident was handpicked by Walt to take several attractions to the New York World’s Fair, and he later helped bring the Disney magic to Florida. But there was more to him beyond Mickey Mouse.

14.  Rex and the Raptor move into The Lego Movie World

Rex Dangervest visited the park to welcome one of the time-traveling, spaceship piloting raptors from The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part to Legoland California. The model, built from 90,151 Lego bricks and standing 8.5 feet tall, will welcome guests at the entrance to the new land when it opens this spring.
 

15.  Gaza theme park’s new train ride simulates the ‘return’ journey to Jerusalem

An amusement park in the southern Gaza Strip recently unveiled a train ride that seeks to simulate a journey from the isolated coastal enclave to Jerusalem’s Old City, home to a number of Islamic holy sites.

16.  Hello Kitty Land Tokyo celebrates My Melody's 45th anniversary and kicks off new activities in 2020

My Melody's 45th anniversary fair is only the first of new attractions and activities at Sanrio Puroland in 2020. Visitors to Hello Kitty Land Tokyo can enjoy the gentle and fun features of "My Melody's Pink Therapy" throughout the year.
 

17.  Hersheypark selects Mobaro for safety and maintenance

Founded in 1906, as a leisure park for the employees of the Hershey Chocolate Company, Hersheypark is one of the biggest theme parks in the US today. Comprising both amusement rides, water rides and a zoo department, the park welcomes more than 3,3 million visitors a year.

Blackpool Pleasure Beach Deputy Managing Director Nick Thompson is now responsible for development and innovation. 

1.  150-Foot Ferris Wheel For Golden Gate Park Celebration Gets Final Approval

A 150-foot Ferris wheel set to be constructed in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park as part of the parks 150th anniversary celebration in April received final approval Wednesday night.  The towering centerpiece of Golden Gate Park’s 150th birthday celebration is set to spin after a final blessing at City Hall. 

2.  Warner Bros announces Harry Potter retailtainment store in New York

Interactive experiences and photo opportunities will be part of the offering, when the world's largest dedicated Harry Potter store opens in New York City later this year.  The retailtainment venue on Broadway has been announced by Warner Bros, which said that New York was the ideal city to launch the venture, with "so many Wizarding World fans, a cutting-edge retail environment and a community that embraces innovative experiences".

3.  Plan for the longest toboggan run in the Netherlands in Groningen

Two entrepreneurs have a concrete plan for building the longest toboggan run in the Netherlands. Initiators Marco van Dijk and Roel Kuper want to build a 468 meter long toboggan run on the Kardingeberg in Groningen. It must reach a top speed of 40 kilometers per hour.

4.  Eden Project makes big announcement over future

The chief executive of the Eden Project has announced he is stepping down after more than five years in the role.  Gordon Seabright will leave his role as Eden Project Limited CEO at the end of January.  Since his tenure began in 2014, the Eden Project has seen annual visitor numbers return to beyond the million mark, while other achievements include the partnership with AEG Presents to run the Eden Sessions, as well as landmark agreements to drill geothermal energy wells at Eden.

5.  Prudential Tower’s Top of the Hub, Skywalk to close in April

Yet another old-line Boston restaurant is closing its doors, this one on the roof of the city.  The Top of the Hub, on the 52nd floor of the Prudential Tower, will service its last meals in April, the company that runs the restaurant said Wednesday.  Along with it, the company will also close the Skywalk Observatory two floors below.

6.  Take A Look Inside New Dave & Buster’s in Shenandoah

Dave & Buster’s brand new Shenandoah location opens to the public Jan. 20! As their first new facility of the decade it offers the latest and greatest options for residents of The Woodlands Area.  “Every time we open a new location our company has the insight to look back at what changes could be done and what they can upgrade,” said General Manager Andy Oreskovich. He said the upgrades include better technology, new games, different menu options, and other amenities.

7.  Madame Tussauds Blackpool in line for more investment

Blackpool Council is set to invest £700,000 into the Madame Tussauds site which it owns in order to create a new Promenade attraction.  Councillors are being asked to agree to borrow the money so work can begin immediately on creating the new television-themed venture which would be aimed at pre-school children.

8.  Main Event Offering $100,000 For 'Perfect Game' As Part Of Grand Opening Week Celebration In Grand Prairie

It. Has. Finally. ARRIVED.  Main Event, the fastest growing, most innovative dining and entertainment company in the country, will officially open its 43rd family entertainment center in the country at noon on Sunday, Jan. 26 in Grand Prairie, Texas.  The 50,000-square-foot venue is filled with bowling lanes, video games, virtual reality experiences, gravity ropes and a double-decker laser tag arena as well as a full kitchen and bar stocked with destination-worthy food and drink options.

9.  Urban Air Adventure Park Announces 2019 Year In Results: Diverse And Robust

PRNewswire -- Urban Air Adventure Park, the world's leader in active indoor family entertainment, announced today record performance in 2019 with over 30 million guests visiting a Park last year. Key components of a successful business model that generated robust and recurring cash flow for Urban Air franchisees included the launch of the Endless Play Membership Program, a first for the Family Entertainment industry. Over half of the company's franchisees systemwide are reinvesting their earnings and opening additional Urban Air Parks leading to a record number of openings in 2019 with 54 new locations in the United States and Urban Air's first signed agreement in Saudi Arabia.

10.  SkyRide gondola opens as part of upgrades at Olympic complex

Visitors to Lake Placid can now ride in style to the top of the Olympic ski jumps! The SkyRide gondola is now officially open to the public.  The $2.9 million project allows athletes, coaches and visitors to ride in one of six new cabins.  Before the gondola, the only way up was by a chairlift.

11.  Judge issues ruling after neighbors fight Hilton Head go-kart track. Here’s what’s next

An appeal by neighbors to stop an outdoor electric go-kart track on Hilton Head Island has been turned down by a Beaufort County judge, giving the proposed track a green light to start development.  Judge Marvin Dukes decided Jan. 9 to deny the appeal brought by the Indigo Run POA and resident Tyson Miller, who said the Town of Hilton Head zoning board was wrong to allow the track.

12.  Museum of Science and Industry President and CEO David Mosena Announces Retirement

The Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago (MSI) today announced that David Mosena is retiring as Museum president and chief executive officer, effective October 2020. Mosena has served in his role since 1997.  "Having the privilege to serve as head of this wonderful institution for more than 22 years has been the honor of a lifetime," said Mosena. "It has been an absolute pleasure working alongside the Museum’s brilliant staff, supportive trustees and passionate friends of MSI. It is their dedication, generosity and guidance that allows MSI to have such an incredible impact in inspiring our young people and I am proud of all we have accomplished together.
Waterpark / Aquatics News

1.  Hanoi water park where two children drowned razed

An unlicensed water park in Hanoi where two children drowned last year has been demolished.  Around 100 workers and eight bulldozers were dispatched on Wednesday to the Thanh Ha Water Park in Ha Dong District following a decision by the district last month.

3.  This Disney Water Park Stays Open After Dark (and Tickets are Less Than Magic Kingdom!)

3.  Cowabunga Bay Water Park to hire more than 300 for upcoming season

Cowabunga Bay Water Park is hiring hundreds of people for its upcoming season.  More than 300 employees are needed for positions throughout the park, including lifeguards, guest services, EMTs, cashiers, cooks, cabana servers, maintenance and more, according to a news release from the park. Cowabunga Bay's seventh season begins March 7.

4.  When it's too cold to swim outside, check out one of these indoor waterparks in Wisconsin

The weather may be cold, snowy and dreary.   That's the perfect time to take the kids somewhere to swim — indoors, that is.  Luckily, there are lots indoor waterparks within a few hours' drive of Milwaukee.

5.  Atlantis Sanya Presented by FOSUN Tourism Ushers in Year of the Mouse with Spring Reunions and Fabulous Giveaways

Spring is a time for embracing fresh starts and bidding farewell to the past year, the traditional Chinese New Year is symbolic of joyful reunions as families and loved ones gather to usher in new beginnings. Aquarium / Zoo News

1.  Virginia Zoo offering brand new augmented reality tour

The Virginia Zoo unveiled a new technology that will take Zoo visitors on an immersive tour to meet and learn more about its animal residents. The zoo is offering an Augmented Reality Tour!  The tour is a collaboration with Life Preserve and ECPI University. The tour features 12 stops around the Zoo and provides a learning adventure about the animals, their counterparts in the wild, conservation efforts for the species, and even behind-the-scenes footage.

2.  Sarasota County commits $20 million to new Mote Aquarium

It's been talked about for a couple of years now-- Mote Marine Lab is expanding and opening up a brand-new aquarium.   The land is locked down in Nathan Benderson Park, but now all they need is the money.  The Sarasota County Commission voted unanimously Wednesday in support of the future Mote Science and Education Aquarium. They also made a commitment to fund $20 million of the project. 

3.  Youtuber climbs in the ZOO Antwerp animal shelter

After theme parks, YouTube channel StukTV is now also aiming at animal parks. A while ago the Dutch youtubers made a noise in the Belgian zoo ZOO Antwerp. That can be seen in a new video.  Normally the brutal video makers come in by secretly climbing over a fence, but this time it didn't work. That's why they bought a ticket for the change. Once in the park, StukTV member Thomas van der Vlugt decided to bother other visitors with a dinosaur suit.

4.  Controversy Over $8M Amphitheater At Turtle Back Zoo Continues

Essex County officials aren't giving up on their plans to build an $8 million amphitheater near the Shores of Africa area at the Turtle Back Zoo in West Orange.  The project would include a 500-seat outdoor classroom with stage lighting. It would be partly funded by a $4 million special appropriation from Gov. Phil Murphy's administration, with the remainder coming from the county's operating budget.

5.  Want to work at an aquarium? Another American Dream job fair planned next weekend

Always wanted to work at an aquarium? What about Legoland?  Here's your chance.  Merlin Entertainments, the company behind the Sea Life Aquarium and Legoland Discovery Center at American Dream, will be hosting a two-day job fair next weekend, and is looking to hire more than 100 part-time and full-time employees. 

6.  Birmingham Zoo donates $10K to help Australian wildlife

The Birmingham Zoo is donating $10,000 to save wildlife threatened by the destructive bushfires in Australia.  That donation comes from the Zoo's Conservation Fund and will go directly to the Zoo and Aquarium Association, Australasia.  The zoo tells us it’s estimated over a billion plants and animals have been impacted by the bushfires.

7.  Roach Scented Candle? Bronx Zoo Wants You to ‘Name-a-Roach’ for Valentine’s Day

It started with a "hiss" how did it end up like this?  The Bronx Zoo is again giving donors the opportunity to name its giant Madagascar hissing cockroaches after their loved ones, or whatever funny roach puns you could possibly think of.  The zoo's annual Valentine's Day "Name-a-roach" program has lasted for almost a decade and it's possibly going to continue "until death do us part."

8.  Gov’t Commissioner Blames Zoo Director for Risk of Biodome Incompletion

The government will not allocate more funds for the biodome to be completed, Minister of State for the development of Budapest and the metropolitan agglomeration Balázs Fürjes told Inforádió. An additional HUF 20 billion (EUR 60 million) is needed for the completion.

9.  PIER 39 and Aquarium of the Bay Celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Sea Lions' Arrival

It was a difficult time for San Francisco in the months following October of 1989.  The community was focused on getting back on their feet after the Loma Prieta earthquake rocked the Bay Area.  Then an extraordinary thing happened - California sea lions began hauling out in PIER 39’s Marina.    To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the arrival of the sea lions to PIER 39, thirty six-foot tall Sea Lion Statues painted by thirty local artists, will dot premier spots across San Francisco in late January, where they will remain on display throughout 2020. Conceived by the Smithsonian Affiliated Aquarium of the Bay, Sea Lion Center and jointly implemented with PIER 39, this art installation is part of the largest STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) initiative in California.     

10.  Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium Welcomes Nessie, The Northern Elephant Seal, To The Water’s Edge

Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium has a new resident at the Water’s Edge exhibit.  Nessie, the Northern Elephant Seal, is settling into her new digs and getting to know the other residents of the exhibit — Ellie Mae, who is also an elephant seal, and Nav and Piper, the sea lions.
Tourism / Other News

1.  The World's Best Value Tourist Attractions for 2020

The study analyzed 66 of the world’s most-visited tourist attractions, comparing their admission fees to social media sentiment and scoring each out of 10. With an entry fee of under $10 and a perfect online sentiment score of 100 percent, the Peterhof Palace earns an impressive 9.6.

2.  Massive Trove of Artifacts Shipped to Ripley's Believe It or Not!

A massive trove of "artifacts" has been shipped to Ripley's Believe It or Not! — a company known for its unusual objects. The artifacts arrived by ship in Miami on May 15, 2019, and were then sent to Ripley's Orlando headquarters.

Editor's Note: This article has been updated with comments from Ripley's, who say that the artifacts did not come from Sri Lanka, as Live Science had reported. They also made clear that the company does not use looted or stolen artifacts

3.  How Meow Wolf turned “immersive art experiences” into big business

NESTLED IN MOUNTAINS, basking in sunlight, the city of Santa Fe has long enjoyed a vibrant art scene. Tourists can visit top-class museums and more than 100 private galleries. But the longest queue is not in the quaint town-centre, where building codes dictate architecture reminiscent of Native American adobe homes. It is on the south side, at the House of Eternal Return, for an “immersive art experience” constructed in a former bowling alley. Giant sculptures of robots and spiders tower over people waiting to enter at pre-booked intervals.
