Upcoming Workshop

Pacing-
Bringing All Your Story Elements Together to Become a Master Manipulator
with Kim McDougall

Pacing is the number one element that affects how your reader reacts to your story. Learn to leave your readers breathless in action scenes or emotionally wrung out in sensitive romantic scenes.

In this interactive workshop we’ll look at elements such as dialogue, description, transitions and deep POV.

Bring your own work-in-progress (or use the prepared samples) to learn how each of these elements can speed up or slow down a narrative and create the exact mood you strive for in each of your scenes.

The workshop will be held on Thursday, January 30th from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm at Lauft, 17600 Yonge St (Upper Canada Mall)

This event is sold out.

Help Strengthen Our Partnership With Libraries . . .

We’re looking for WCYR ambassadors to lead one-hour seminars in York
region  libraries. You (or a panel of speakers) would talk about the WCYR, run your seminar, and sell your books if you’re published.

For this volunteer option, you’ll get the word out about the WCYR and yourself, gain experience in public speaking, and land a solid resume credit.

If you’d like to share your insights about the craft or journey of writing, please consider this opportunity. You don’t need to be published to participate.

Please contact Rae Keen, Library Liaison at rae.keen@sympatico.ca

Looking for a Critique Group?

If you’d like to launch or join a critique group with other WCYR members, participate in the new critique group forum thread on the WCYR
website: https://wcyork.ca/forum/the-critique-groups/

Only WCYR members can access this link.

Critique Group Organizer, Rae Keen rae.keen@sympatico.ca, will also help you make connections.

Author Kim McDougall presents a seminar on The Showing/Telling Dilemma at the Angus Glen branch of the Markham Public Library on Thursday, January 16th at 7 p.m.

“Show don’t tell” is an often heard mantra in writing. But how can you tell the difference? And how do you transform “telling” into “showing?” Finally, when is it okay to “tell?” This workshop will explore these important questions, by looking at dialogue, point of view, description, pacing and transitions, so you’ll learn to spot and fix the problem passages in your manuscript.

Please contact Ariana Ferrone at aferrone@markham.library.on.ca if you’d like to attend.
