HONOURS/AWARDS

Maanjiwe nendamowinan has been recognized internationally for its thoughtful design. UTM's newest building, designed by Toronto-based Perkins and Will Ontario, won a 2019 IIDA Global Excellence award in the education category. The annual juried design competition recognizes originality and creativity in design across 15 categories.

IN MEMORIAM

Sue Thomson, executive assistant, Office of the Dean, passed away on New Year's Day after a lengthy illness. Sue began working with the Dean's office in 2003 and worked here for 14 years. She was a well-respected and knowledgeable member of the Office and a dear friend to many at UTM.

On June 30, Professor Angela Lange will end her term as vice-dean faculty. A search committee is being struck. To suggest someone for the committee, or for more information, please reach out to treena.dsouza@utoronto.ca. The deadline for nominations to the committee is Friday, Jan. 31.

Fiona Rawle, associate professor, teaching stream, of the Department of Biology, spoke to CBC News and Global News about UTM health sciences student Zeynab Asadi Lari, who perished in the Ukrainian airliner crash. Assistant professor of sociology Neda Maghbouleh spoke to several media outlets, including the Globe and Mail and The New York Times about the tremendous loss to Canada’s academic community. Political science professor Aurel Braun appeared on Vancouver radio’s The Simi Shara Show to discuss diplomatic implications for Canada.

Love in a time of Capitalism: NOW Toronto named “Casimir & Caroline” as one of the 20 plays to see in Toronto in 2020. UTM English & Drama associate professor Holger Syme translated and adapted the 1932 play by Hungarian playwright Ödön von Horváth for its North American debut with the Howland Company. The production runs Jan. 14 to Feb. 9 at Streetcar Crowsnest in Toronto.
Emeritus professor Josef Svoboda was profiled in the Hamilton Spectator. The retired professor of biology was awarded the Order of Canada for his contributions to the study of tundra ecosystems. Emeritus colleagues Gary Sprules and Ray Cummins, also of UTM’s Department of Biology, lauded Svoboda for his accomplishments as a researcher and teacher.

Electric Energy Online featured a study co-authored by political science professor Steven Bernstein that finds halting climate change means a world without fossil fuels.
