Friday, Jan 24: Sarah Milligan on Oral History & Community Engagement

On Friday, January 24, guest speaker Sarah Milligan will present "Motivations and Expectations: Oral History and Community Engagement," in room G40 at 11 am. Milligan, head of the Oklahoma Oral History Research Program at Oklahoma State University, will talk about the core values, challenges, and rewards of oral history work.

Now Open: Exhibition of Mozert’s Florida Springs Photography Curated by Art History Alumna Elizabeth Loeffelman

The State Archives of Florida is now hosting an exhibition of Florida photographer Bruce Mozert's work curated by Art History alumna Elizabeth Loeffelman. "Underwater Innovations: The Florida Springs Photography of Bruce Mozert" is open through February in the R.A. Gray Building. The exhibition features underwater photographs taken by Bruce Mozert at Silver Springs during the 1950s.

Meet the Officers: The 2019–20 Undergraduate Art History Association

The Undergraduate Art History Association officers gather in an interview to discuss their goals and future plans for UAHA. The officers show how their different backgrounds and concerns led to their position and the impact it has had on them.

Thursby Lecture Feb. 5: Dr. heather ahtone (Choctaw/Chickasaw) on Decolonizing the Museum

On Wednesday, February 5, guest speaker dr. heather ahtone will present "Decolonizing the Museum: an Indigenous Curator's Thoughts," in room G40 at 4pm. heather atone is currently the senior curator at the First Americans Museum in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. This public lecture is the first in this year's Vincent & Agatha Thursby Distinguished Scholars Lecture Series.

Gabriela Germana’s New Teaching Position, Curated Exhibition, and Invited Talks

In the fall of 2019, doctoral candidate Gabriela Germana joined the faculty at University of South Florida as Visiting Instructor in Contemporary Art. She also curated the exhibition "Resistance & Change: Tablas of Sarhua, Contemporary Paintings from the Peruvian Andes" at the Pensacola Museum of Art and gave invited lectures at research conferences in West Palm Beach, San Antonia, and Vancouver.

Inside the Museum and Cultural Heritage Studies Program

Our Museum and Cultural Heritage Studies (MCHS) program allows Art History students to focus on museum practice and cultural heritage as an academic subject and prepare for careers in museums or other cultural heritage agencies. Dr Kristin Dowell, director of the program since August 2019, and MA students Emily McLean and Olivia Morris provide a look at current and upcoming MCHS programs, as well as their individual research projects and professional activities.

37th Annual Art History Graduate Symposium – March 27 & 28, 2020

The Department of Art History will host the 37th Annual Art History Graduate Student Symposium on Friday afternoon, March 27, and Saturday, March 28, 2020. The keynote speaker this year is Charlene Villaseñor Black, Professor in the Department of Art History and the César E. Chávez Department of Chicana/o Studies, University of California, Los Angeles.

Doctoral Candidate Amy Bowman Co-Authors Book Chapter on Pittsburgh Civic Arena

PhD candidate Amy J. Bowman-McElhone co-authored a book chapter in the edited volume Contested Commemoration in U.S. History: Diverging Public Interpretations. The chapter, "Memory-Place and the Unintentional Monument: Pittsburgh’s Civic Arena and Its Legacy" originated in Dr. Karen Bearor's Monuments and Memorials course in the spring of 2013.

The fall 2019 undergraduate Museum Object class curated "Stories Laid in Stone: Modern Architecture in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem," an exhibition exploring the cities’ myths, cultures, and identities through the lens of architecture.
