Having had some really good geography in my early childhood education (can't promise the same for kids now but I'll stick a pin in that) and having lived overseas, any time I'm at the beach and stared out over the vastness of the Atlantic ocean, I thought I knew what was beyond the waters.
In a recent family conversation, we decided to Google it and, low and behold, found out that I, specifically, was wrong (thought it was France...ah, gay Paris. Believe it or not, we're looking at Portugal! Check out this really cool map below that shows what is directly across from any of the beaches in the Americas...pretty cool stuff!
