Dear <<First Name>>:
Birmingham Water Works Board is excited to continue our annual “A World Without Water” school program to teach fifth-graders across its service area all about the importance of water!
The theme for the program challenges the students to grasp how life would be completely different if we had to live without water. Water makes up at least 70 percent of our bodies. We use it to cook and clean, as well as to make products and materials. Increasingly, water pollution threatens the availability of a safe water supply.

As part of the program, an art competition is open to all fifth graders in the water system’s service area, which includes schools in Jefferson, Shelby, Blount, St. Clair and Walker Counties. Students can create a traditional, hand-made poster, or they can put together a 3D diorama. Additionally, for students who lack accessibility to art supplies to participate in the competition, we’ll be happy to provide them with those items, upon request.
Judging will be based on creativity, originality, and how well the poster expresses the theme, “A World Without Water- the impact pollution has on water.” Prizes will be awarded to each winner, first through third. The first-place winner will receive an Xbox One, the second-place winner will receive an iPad Mini, and the third-place winner will receive an iPod Touch.
Submissions for the competition are due at 4:00 p.m. on March 27, 2020. Don’t wait; have your students start thinking about their projects now! Download our poster contest flyer for complete rules and details.

We are now scheduling visits from our BWWB team to visit area schools ahead of the competition to engage students with a presentation regarding water conservation and pollution, safe and fun water experiments, a quiz game, and an explanation of the art competition rules.
