Eight young Dallas ISD public speakers will be representing their schools in the finals of the 28th Annual Foley Gardere MLK Jr. Oratory Competition. Students will deliver original three-to-five-minute speeches speaking to the theme, “What would Dr. King’s vision be for America in 2020?”
When: 9:30 a.m., Friday, Jan. 17

  • 10:15 a.m.: Interview opportunities with finalists, judges and VIPs.
  • 11:20 a.m.: The Oratory Competition will begin.
  • The 2019-2020 finalists are:
    • Jasira King, fifth-grader from William Brown Miller Elementary School
    • Kyla Combs, fourth-grader from Charles Rice Learning Center
    • Dinastee McKinney, fourth-grader from Clara Oliver Elementary School
    • Ayanna Gee, fifth-grader from John Neely Bryan Elementary School
    • Colin Harris, fifth-grader from J.P. Starks Math, Science and Technology Vanguard
    • James Johnson III, fifth-grader from Thomas L. Marsalis Elementary School
    • Dominic Patermo, fourth-grade from Harry C. Withers Elementary School

Established in Dallas in 1993, the Annual Foley Gardere MLK Jr. Oratory Competition seeks to recognize and encourage the writing and oratory skills of elementary students. It is also an opportunity to celebrate cultural diversity and spotlight talented Dallas ISD students as they learn about Dr. King.
