Electric Mobility Monthly

January 2020

Welcome to the first 2020 edition of Forth's monthly newsletter!

We're looking forward to significant developments in electric transportation this year as consumer demand and awareness continue to increase and cities and states across the country provide incentives and legislation to curb carbon emissions from transportation by promoting and increasing the adoption of electric vehicles and infrastructure.

To start the year off, we've got a great new video, which provides a great overview of our work. If you've ever had any questions about what we do, this is a great place to start. We've also recently added four new members to the Forth team

This month we're covering:
  • New Jersey's embrace of new mobility with the passing of a bold transportation electrification bill
  • Good news from the International Code Council's guidelines calling to for all new homes in the U.S. to be EV-Ready
  • Electrify America's new partnership with Bank of America to add charging stations at bank locations across the nation
  • And as always, we're excited about all of the progress leading up to EVS33
We hope you enjoy the news and we always love hearing your feedback. You can always keep track of what we’re up to on the Forth website

Forth's New Video

While we pride ourselves on the work we do in advancing electric transportation, due to the range of areas we focus on–industry development, consumer engagement, demonstration projects, and policy advocacy–we're always looking for new ways to communicate our message and spread the word on our work.

So we're excited to have this new video available which gives a concise overview of what we do, who we work with and why it's important. Please take a moment to watch the video and let us know your thoughts! The video was produced with help from our good friends at Brand Definition

New Jersey's New Mobility

New Jersey’s electric vehicle bill has been passed by both the state’s Assembly and the Senate and signed into law by Governor Phil Murphy.

The bill calls for 330,000 EV’s by 2025, 2 million by 2035, and at least 85% of all light-duty vehicles sold in the state to be electric by December of 2040. Consumers would qualify for rebates of as much as $5,000. The legislation will also mandate N.J. to have 10% of its bus fleet to be electric by 2024, 50% by 2026, and 100% by 2032.

The bill also incorporates mandates on charging, calling for at least 400 DC Fast Chargers available for public use at 200 charging locations by the end of 2025, with at least 75 of the locations at travel corridor locations with at least two DC Fast Chargers and no more than 25 miles between the charging locations.

EV-Ready Building Codes For U.S.

Earlier this month, the International Code Council (ICC), a building standards organization, which sets voluntary guidelines for new homes, voted to approve a provision to include the capacity to add electric charging to all new homes built in the US, making them “EV-ready.”

The new recommended infrastructures include panels, outlets, and conduits capable of charging at least one full-size EV in a single-family garage overnight.

It’s not much more complicated than including an extra 240-volt outlet for a clothes dryer and it’s significantly more cost-effective than retrofitting after construction.

With an imminent rise of electric vehicles expected in the next ten years, the need for charging will increase concurrently.

Of course, this leaves the challenge of providing charging in existing multi-family housing. That's a challenge Forth is tackling through a USDOE-funded project to develop user-friendly tools and information for building owners and managers. The project will demonstrate innovative technologies and create a toolkit with resources to address barriers and to accelerate the facilitation of charging in residential areas. Electrifying Bank of America

Forth member, Electrify America will be installing fast-charging stations at Bank of America locations this year, providing 140 chargers throughout California, Georgia, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, Oregon, Virginia, and Washington.

Electrify America is working to install more charging in urban areas as part of its Cycle-2 phase.

“As we continue to offer more convenient places to build new charging stations, Bank of America was a natural fit,” said Brendan Jones, chief operating officer at Electrify America. “As one of the largest banks in the country, its locations enable current and future EV drivers to save time by charging their vehicles while visiting a financial center. The new charging sites are also open to the public.

The DC fast chargers will range from 150-350 kWhs and will primarily offer the CCS standard plugs, with at least one CHAdeMO connector at each station.

Bank of America has more than 100 EV charging ports installed at office locations for employee use, with more installations planned in 2020. Bank of America also provides reimbursements to employees who choose to purchase or lease an approved electric vehicle.

Growing Forth

We are pleased to announce that the Forth team has added four new members.

Rhett Lawrence joins us as a Policy Manager and will coordinate Forth's policy work in the Pacific Northwest. Rhett has 20 years of experience working collaboratively on energy and environmental programs in Oregon.

Sabrina Cerquera joins us as a Program Associate.  She'll support the pilot programs team promoting transportation electrification efforts in cities nationwide. She has previous experience in the nonprofit space and federal agency on water policy and programming with an equity focus.

Lindsay Schuelke joins as a Program Associate to work on programs such as the equity financing pilot, which brings fair financial options, education, and outreach to help ridehailing drivers throughout the country go electric.

Christal Beauclaire Reyes joins us as a Program Associate and will assist Forth’s consumer engagement team and staff the Forth Electric Showcase. She has experience in new mobility, equity, and sustainability.

Meeting of the Minds

Forth's Executive Director, Jeff Allen, will be participating in the Meeting of the Minds Annual Summit, spotlighting innovations in urban sustainability and connected transportation February 19-21 in Phoenix, AZ.

Jeff will moderate a panel and do a hands-on workshop on the challenges that cities face as they work to accelerate the electrification of "everything that moves."

As cities engage with fast-moving and disruptive mobility technologies, struggle to combine policies that discourage private automobiles while encouraging the electrification of those that remain, and work to ensure new mobility technologies benefit the populations that need them the most, the road can be a bumpy one. Jeff will draw on hands-on experiences of our work with cities around the country through the Bloomberg American Cities Climate Challenge to provide best practice advice.

The Meeting of the Minds Annual Summit is a one-stop opportunity for thought
leaders seeking cross-disciplinary strategies and partnerships that deliver scalable,
transferable, and equitable solutions for cities and regions.

Portland International Auto Show

Forth is hosting Electric Avenue at the 2020 Portland International Auto Show (PIAS) in February.

This will be PIAS’ premier electric vehicle (EV) exhibit, in partnership with Portland Metro's local electric fuel providers: Portland General Electric (PGE), Pacific Power, and Clark PUD.

At Electric Avenue, visitors will have the opportunity to learn about electric vehicles, charging, and financial incentives. They can test-drive models like the Hyundai Kona or Audi E-Tron and enter to win great prizes, ranging from tickets to see the Trail Blazers to a weekend getaway in an EV.

The 2020 Portland International Auto Show (PIAS) will be held February 20–23 at the Oregon Convention Center.

The International Electric Vehicle Symposium Comes to Portland

Forth is co-hosting EVS33, the largest electric mobility industry event in the world.

We're working to present the finest of the Pacific Northwest's world-class technology, environments and businesses to the international electric transportation community coming to Portland this June.
