Love is in the Air

The month of February usually brings to mind Valentine's Day and engagements.  And, with those thoughts in mind I set out to find stories of love in the historic newspapers.  This of course led me to the more comical side of love.  In looking over many wedding announcements in The Castle Rock Journal during the early 1900's I found a recurring theme.  They always list who the newly weds are, where the nuptials occurred, what the whole wedding party was wearing and how many wonderful gifts they received.  They also had to include well wishes from all their friends and family.  Every announcement gave glowing reports on the dresses, suits and flowers worn by all, except one that caught my eye from January 1900; "the bride was handsomely attired in white silk and carried brides roses.  The bridesmaid was dressed in drab and carried pink roses".  I guess the bridesmaid didn't want to outshine the bride.

It was very important at the time to mention that the couple did indeed receive many gifts.  At times they even listed who gave what item.  Imagine how we would like that now a days.  One announcement stated " The popularity of the couple is shown by the many valuable presents sent them such as solid silver sets, cut glass pieces, chinaware and fine linen". Another wrote" Many costly presents were received, a list  of which will be published next week". Yet another stated, "The happy couple were the recipients of a great number of valuable and useful presents, far too many to mention".

I also found a few snippets from articles on the subject of marriage that can make one giggle:

  • As a matter of fact, it is obvious that more crimes are committed by married men than by single men.....one such crime is wife murder (1908).

  • Young married women are amongst the worst sufferers from female diseases.Unaccustomed as they are to the cares of married life, these weak women all need "Wine of Cardui" women's relief. (1906 - you really couldn't say that now a days).

  • An Atlanta man was arrested a few days ago for kissing his wife in public.  This should be a lesson to married men everywhere.  Let the married man limit his public demonstrations of affection to calling her "Pet" or "Baby" (1906 - seriously?).

I will end with a joke I found from 1902, " Are you married or unmarried?" asked the theatrical manager of an applicant for engagement.  "Unmarried' replied she.  "I've been unmarried four times".
