Surrey International Folk Dancing Society Newsletter
Hi <<First Name>>,
I posted on YouTube all the dances taught at the SIFD Retreat which made me want to dance all of them again! But there are so many! Help me choose which dances to learn on Thursdays for awhile, by going to the website and pressing the button to participate in the poll. All the videos can be watched on the website or follow the link to YouTube. Thanks!
Registration is now open for the Lyrids Folk Dance Festival 2020 which is April 24-26 in Vancouver. Read all about it, and register soon! Want a good deal? We need some people to help out at the festival - register for a work-exchange scholarship and get in for half price! See fees here.
The weekend before the Lyrids weekend, on April 17-19, Calgary International Folkdancers are hosting a workshop with Cristian Florescu and Sonia Dion. See Flyer here. This is one of many festivals and camps you can attend. I've started a page on our website here.
Events which are in the works are:
a Robbie Burns pot-luck night at Windsong where we will lead folk dancing for the residents. This will be January 31 or February 1. We need a good turn-out of dancers to make this event a success.
a week or two of teaching children at Surrey Christian School in January or February. Are you interested in helping?
Extra events are optional and are listed here for your information. If a couple of hours of dancing once a week on Thursdays is as much as you want or can manage, that is fine!
Pre-festival workshop with Maurits & Tineke van Geel, Tuesday, April 21, 7-10pm, Charles Rummel Community Centre, 3630 Lozells Ave, Burnaby.
Pre-festival workshop with Maurits & Tineke van Geel, Thursday, April 23, 7-10pm, Walnut Road Elementary School, 16152 82 Ave, Surrey.
We will be designing a new dance demonstration program for the 2019/20 dancing season. Have ideas? Contact me. As usual, the dances should span the globe, be varied, and not be too difficult.
Need some dance shoes?
Visit the store, danceCraft, in Newton Crossing near the Newton Wave Pool. Melanie Minty owns danceCraft and also writes an Arts column for the Surrey Now newspaper. See the wonderful article Melanie wrote for us here.

The Squalicum Yacht club is the smaller of the two Yacht Clubs side by side on S. Harbor Loop Drive. (South Harbor Loop Drive is connected in a circle with North Harbor Loop Drive.)
How to get there:
From the North, go South on I-5, take the Meridian Street Exit and turn right. From Meridian, take the 3rd right (2nd traffic light) onto Squalicum Way. Follow Squalicum Way and it will merge onto Roeder Street. Shortly thereafter, there will be signs for Squalicum Harbor and Coho Way. Take a right onto Coho Way. The very first possible right turn which is identified with a street sign "N. Harbor Loop Drive", take that right and at the end of that very short road you are in a parking lot. If you would turn left you will see the Squalicum Yacht Club in front of you.
From the South, you can take Holly Street through town to "F" Street. Turn left onto F street toward the water and across the train tracks to Roeder. Turn right onto Roeder Ave Continue on Roeder to Coho Way (City Mac Store) Turn Left onto Coho Way. The first possible right is "N. Harbor Loop Drive". Take that right and drive that short "road" to the end, and turn left into the parking Lot. The small building in front of you is the Squalicum Yacht Club.
