Surrey International Folk Dancing Society Newsletter
Hi <<First Name>>,

I posted on YouTube all the dances taught at the SIFD Retreat which made me want to dance all of them again! But there are so many! Help me choose which dances to learn on Thursdays for awhile, by going to the website and pressing the button to participate in the poll. All the videos can be watched on the website or follow the link to YouTube. Thanks!

Registration is now open for the Lyrids Folk Dance Festival 2020 which is April 24-26 in Vancouver. Read all about it, and register soon! Want a good deal? We need some people to help out at the festival - register for a work-exchange scholarship and get in for half price! See fees here.

The weekend before the Lyrids weekend, on April 17-19, Calgary International Folkdancers are hosting a workshop with Cristian Florescu and Sonia Dion. See Flyer here. This is one of many festivals and camps you can attend. I've started a page on our website here.

Events which are in the works are:
  • a Robbie Burns pot-luck night at Windsong where we will lead folk dancing for the residents. This will be January 31 or February 1. We need a good turn-out of dancers to make this event a success.
  • a week or two of teaching children at Surrey Christian School in January or February. Are you interested in helping?
Extra events are optional and are listed here for your information. If a couple of hours of dancing once a week on Thursdays is as much as you want or can manage, that is fine! Happy Dancing,
Dale

We will be designing a new dance demonstration program for the 2019/20 dancing season. Have ideas? Contact me. As usual, the dances should span the globe, be varied, and not be too difficult.
Here is more information about the Laguna folk dance festival which was announced at our holiday party. If you like to travel and want to dance all weekend, it is a fantastic festival! The National Folk Organization is having its annual conference on that same weekend starting Wednesday evening. I will be attending both.

Hi from Victoria . .  It would be special if you could share my following request via a folk dance recipient list, etc.
BULGARIA and the Grand Koprivshtitsa Folk Festival
August 2-16, 2020   Led by Jim Gold and Lee Otterholt
Sofia, Plovdiv, Bansko, Veliko Turnovo,
Koprivshtitsa Folk Festival!

Do you, or does anyone you know plan to join Jim and Lee?  I promised to assist a folkdance friend lacking an email account. The amazing tour is on her bucket list!  She would appreciate having a female with her during check-in at Newark, New Jersey departure August 3 (Austria Airline) and NWR return flight tba.  Vancouver (YVR-NWR) or Seattle (SEA-NWR) return, as per forthcoming tour itinerary.
Jim Gold will offer a ‘special travel fee break’ to the airport travel ‘assistant’!
Would love to make her wish come true!

Thanks!  Eleanor

Sat Mar 14th - Zakuska
Sat Apr 4th - Balkanarama
Sat May 9th - Orkestar RTW

non-messy snacks welcome
Location: Squalicum Yacht club, 2633 S. Harbor Loop Drive, Bellingham, WA 98225
Party starts at 7:30pm and runs to 10pm.  There is a $15 donation requested.

The Squalicum Yacht club is the smaller of the two Yacht Clubs side by side on S. Harbor Loop Drive. (South Harbor Loop Drive is connected in a circle with North Harbor Loop Drive.)

How to get there:

From the North, go South on I-5, take the Meridian Street Exit and turn right. From Meridian, take the 3rd right (2nd traffic light) onto Squalicum Way. Follow Squalicum Way and it will merge onto Roeder Street. Shortly thereafter, there will be signs for Squalicum Harbor and Coho Way. Take a right onto Coho Way. The very first possible right turn which is identified with a street sign "N. Harbor Loop Drive", take that right and at the end of that very short road you are in a parking lot. If you would turn left you will see the Squalicum Yacht Club in front of you.

From the South, you can take Holly Street through town to "F" Street. Turn left onto F street toward the water and across the train tracks to Roeder. Turn right onto Roeder Ave Continue on Roeder to Coho Way (City Mac Store) Turn Left onto Coho Way. The first possible right is "N. Harbor Loop Drive". Take that right and drive that short "road" to the end, and turn left into the parking Lot. The small building in front of you is the Squalicum Yacht Club.
