Developer Newsletter 003

Welcome to the first Embark newsletter of 2020!

So far this year, we've been researching example-based placement and exploring new ways to create worlds. We've also got an exciting few months for events, starting with a Blender meetup and a new game dev conference in Stockholm.

New to the newsletter? Welcome! I'm Ari, and every month I'll send you a summary of what Embark's been up to in open source and the greater developer ecosystem.

Let me know what you think! You can send feedback about the newsletter or questions to opensource@embark-studios.com.

Exploring Example-based Procedural Placement

Anastasia Opara recently shared a sneak peak of example-based object placement, featuring an adorable kitty helping to build a virtual world.

Here's how she described the project:

"With this demo, our team wanted to explore a feeling of co-creation with a procedural system. The algorithm is embodied in this cute creature, which we internally dubbed Kittus Cognata (because latin is hip!). The kittus tries to assist you by mimicking your placements; it analyzes the neighborhoods of objects you place, and finds similar-looking locations in the level."

"In the previous version (in the gif above), our Kittus Spatium could only understand distances between objects. Recently we extended the algorithm to account for relative positions, allowing for more intricate compositions, including this continuous stone road."
