Keeping Your Connected Home Safe for your Children
More and more families now regularly use a range of devices that connect to the internet, such as smart speakers, smart meters, fitness trackers, and even toys.

Alongside the excitement and convenience of these devices, we also need to be aware of the risks associated with any device that connects to the internet. ThinkUKnow say that these risks include:
  • Concerns have been raised about whether these devices are collecting too much personal information from children.
  • Some children (either accidentally or on purpose) are able to search for and access age-inappropriate material via a connected device such as a smart speaker.
  • Children may make ‘in-app purchases’ and spend money, which is often taken from their parents’ bank account without their knowledge or consent.
  • Some of these devices may be more vulnerable to hacking and monitoring, as there are currently no security standards in place for connected devices.
Luckily, they have also released guidance to support us in keeping their connected homes safe for children: These tips, as well as further details can be found at:

Safer Internet Day 2020

This year's eLIM ePledge: Free home learning resources

Healthy Happy Safe Family Agreement

With Safer Internet Day fast approaching, we have launched our annual e-Pledge for schools to show their commitment to keeping their pupils safe with technology.

This year, our e-Pledge theme is Healthy, Happy, Safe.  We have produced a simple template for parents to use at home and a letter for the school to send home. as well as our Building Habits posters to display in classrooms.

Schools who pledge to share this activity with their families will receive a certificate to display. Download your materials and sign up to the e-Pledge here.

Childnet Film Competition

This month, Childnet have launched their annual film competition for 2020. This year's theme is:

We want an internet where we’re free to…

Childnet say they are 'on the look-out for films with a clear message about positive use of the internet... that tell us why you want an internet that allow people to feel free and safe online and how we can make this happen.'

Film making is a creative, collaborative way for children to share their understanding of a topic with their peers and the whole school community and this competition gives them an opportunity to be recognised by a national organisation.

TikTok Family Safety Mode

Tiktok is proving to be a huge success, with many of its users being children and young people. We are hearing from many schools and parents that their children are Tiktok users.

As with all social networks, users need to be aware of the risks as well as the opportunities and it's vital that parents monitor their children's use. To support parents in this, a new Family Safety mode has been launched. It allows parents to link their own account to their children's and set restrictions on content, contact and manage screentime.

Updated ActiveBYTES planning

All Spring Term ActiveBYTE lesson plans for 'I am safe and secure' have been updated for this term.

Some plans have been completely rewritten and there are minor changes to many of the plans, so please let colleagues know to use the new version from the ActiveBYTE webpage rather than a plan they may have downloaded last year.

We have also produced alternative assemblies for schools that may have used the KS1 and KS2 spring assemblies last year.
