Last week, New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo presented his 2020 State of the State address and vision in Albany. Entitled “Making Progress Happen,” the governor’s proposals covered a wide range of issues and ideas, from addressing climate change and increases in hate crimes to legalizing recreational cannabis and increasing protections for domestic violence victims. This year the proposed budget will be released separately from the State of the State. The governor’s proposals can be viewed in the proposal book, and below you can find a list of some of the proposals most relevant to NYC workforce and economic development community (click on each to jump to that section of the proposal book). The most noteworthy of these is the proposal to expand New York's $175 million workforce development initiative to meet emerging job demand.

WPTI and the Workforce Field Building Hub have launched their 2020 Survey of Frontline Workforce Professionals. The survey focuses on the day-to-day experience of frontline workers across New York City’s workforce development system. Primary topics include: Wages, hours, and benefits; Career advancement and professional development opportunities; Diversity, equity, and inclusion; and the impact of contract, outcome and documentation compliance on worker experience. The survey is anonymous and will inform recommendations for systemic changes at the City and philanthropic levels in the interest of both workers and workforce organizations.
If you are a frontline worker, working with clients in New York City, you can and should take the survey. Frontline workers include (but are not limited to): Case Managers; Employment Coordinators/Specialists; Instructors/Trainers; Intake coordinators; Job Coaches; Job Developers; Retention Specialists; and anyone providing wraparound services or administrative support that has any direct client interaction. If you are a director, manager, or supervisor, encourage members of your team to complete this survey, which has the potential to not only improve day-to-day worker experience, but also shape city policy, strengthen practice and improve outcomes across New York City. The survey will remain open through mid-February.
Strong Nonprofits Campaign: Nominations for 2020 Notable Women in Human Services Hall of Fame
March is Women’s History Month, and the Strong Nonprofits Campaign is honoring and celebrating women who have made a significant impact on human services and our communities. The campaign will be highlighting the critical work done by these women, and the need for immediate funding in this year’s budget to ensure they are fairly paid. The human services workforce is over 80% women, and an investment in the workforce helps to address issues around equity. Nominations are due this Friday, January 17.
Know a woman in human services you think should be honored in our hall of fame? Your nominee should be currently employed at a nonprofit human services organization in a direct services role and be someone who goes above and beyond, exemplifying the importance of human services in New York’s communities. You should only nominate one staff per organization. Honorees will be featured in a Hall of Fame on March 10, with a photo and write up of their contributions and accomplishments.
Funding Opportunity: Hispanic Federation Latino Nonprofit Digital Accelerator RFP
The Hispanic Federation has announced a Latino Nonprofit Digital Accelerator Request for Proposals (RFP), aiming to increase Latino nonprofit capacity to prepare 12,500 Latinos for the workforce of tomorrow over a two-year period. As part of the RFP, agencies will complete a simple Self-Assessment of Digital Skills Readiness to better understand their digital skills capacity needs. Twenty-five Latino-led and serving nonprofit organizations will be awarded a minimum of $50,000 to enhance and expand their digital workforce activities. HF will provide capacity-building technical assistance to strengthen these organizations digital skills training capabilities and build their capacity to track outcomes.

Young Invincibles Launches Spring 2020 New York Young Advocate Program
Young Invincibles is launching their first Young Advocates program in NYC. The Young Advocates program is a paid fellowship for young people to get involved in higher education advocacy. This is a great opportunity for students to not only learn about the advocacy landscape in NYC, but also how to translate their own experiences into action. Young Advocates will work on Fridays from February to June 2020 on projects that elevate their voices on higher education issues in New York. Applications are due Wednesday, January 22.
To be eligible to apply, participants must be between the ages of 18 - 34. Many applicants are current college students, but that is not a requirement to participate.
