JANUARY 18th, 2019/כ״א טבת תש״פ
Mazel Tov to Jordan Pelc & Miriam Ben-dat Pelc and Family on the birth of their daughter Lea Shelley.
We wish the family endless Nachat!
Dear <<First Name>>,

This week in shul we begin Sefer Shemot, the 2nd book of the Chamisha Chumshai Torah (The Five Books of the Torah).  Another name given to this book by our sages is “Sefer Hageulah” – the book of redemption. On the surface, we can understand this name as a description of the contents of the book, since it deals with the story of the Jewish redemption from Egypt after a long and brutal 210 years of slavery. Parshat Shemot in fact is the story that we recount every Pesach.

However, such a superficial explanation assumes that there is no connection between the two names “Sefer Shemot” and “Sefer Hageulah” and that they are simply two distinct names, when perhaps there is a way to connect the names to each other.

Shemot means “name” and a name is often the term that is used to identify an individual, to tell us who they are. A name, however, might not just be a way of referring to a person, but actually a way of understanding who they are and what they represent. As Jews, we believe that our names represent our essence and we have an obligation to “live up to our name”. With this in mind, perhaps Sefer Shemot is directing us to appreciate the importance of embracing who we are both as a Jewish nation and as individuals, and the name and reputation we aim to achieve.

If one is successful in doing that, in living up to his or her name, that is precisely the moment that unlocks geulah – redemption. Our greatest goal as individuals is to understand and appreciate and then actualize our potential- to live up to our name. That is what brings redemption.

Moshe himself experiences this process in this week’s parsha. When G-d presents him with his task, to go to Pharoah and   redeem the Jewish people, Moshe fights it, and says he is not worthy of being a leader. He didn’t yet recognize his “name”. Eventually he is shown that he can and must stand up to his  calling, and by traversing the path of redeeming and unlocking his own potential, he is ultimately able to lead the redemption of our entire people.

The lesson is clear: the key to our ability to play a significant role in the lives of others and make a difference in the world around us is to first understand the essence of who we are.

Wishing you a Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Lipner

With the winter months ahead and Mincha/Maariv getting  earlier, we need your help especially to ensure that those saying Kaddish have a minyan. While we know that many people cannot commit every evening, if you live in the area you might be able to “pitch in” from time to time. The Rabbi created a whatsapp group  to help spread the word and ensure we get a minyan if we see we are going to be short.

To join this group & mitzvah, please email Rabbi Lipner at ravlipner@gmail.com

Thank you to those of you who have already joined our Whatsapp group.
