Shana Moulton
January 16 - February 20, 2020

Art Space Gallery at Fresno City College
Division of Fine, Performing, and Communication Arts
Opening reception: 5-8PM, Thursday January 16th

Shana Moulton’s interdisciplinary works in video, performance, sound, and installation blur the lines between autobiography and fiction, centering on her filmic alter ego Cynthia. Moulton grew up in Oakhurst, a mountain town about 40 miles east of Fresno, which sits just outside Yosemite National Park; much of her work is loosely based on her experiences growing up there, with the landscape of the Sierra Nevada mountains featuring as a backdrop. Poignant and funny, Moulton’s work implements everyday objects, symbols, digitally animated body parts, and even medical devices into a surreal cosmology that offers a wry critique of contemporary wellness culture and the search for self improvement.

BIO: Shana Moulton (1976, Oakhurst), has shown her work extensively both in the U.S. and internationally, including at the Palais De Tokyo (Paris); Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (San Francisco); Kunsthaus Glarus (Switzerland); Art in General (New York); Fondazione Morra Greco (Naples); Galeria Arsenał (Białystok), and Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) Cleveland. She has participated in group exhibitions at Migros Museum Für Gegenwartskunst (Zurich); Salzburger Kunstverein (Salzburg); Museu Nacional de Arte Contemporânea do Chiado (Lisbon); Oakland Museum of California; Institute of Contemporary Arts London; Guangdong Times Museum (Guangzhou); Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts; Göteborgs Konsthall (Göteborg); Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia, and Wiels Center for Contemporary Art, (Brussels). She has performed at The Museum of Modern Art; The New Museum of Contemporary Art; The Kitchen (New York); The Andy Warhol Museum (Pittsburgh); The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and many others. Moulton's work has been featured in Artforum, The New York Times, ArtReview, Art in America, Flash Art, Artpress, Metropolis M, BOMB Magazine, and Frieze, among others. Moulton is Assistant Professor of Art at UC Santa Barbara.

ARTIST STATEMENT:
To me, art is as natural as breathing. It’s a huge part of my life; whether consuming it in galleries, on websites, discussing with others, experiencing through the power of social media, or creating it for myself. It’s part of the very nature of my whole being, as a person. From the moment I started drawing as a child, it helped me express how I felt about the world around me, or ideas I couldn’t quite articulate.

I am a local artist in Fresno, California. I started my painting journey with traditional Asian Indian pieces in watercolor. I transitioned from watercolor to acrylic six years ago. All my works are in acrylic. I draw inspiration for my artwork from a variety of sources: anything that allows me to think about how culture comes together. I'm always on the lookout – I observe people in the street; I watch films, I read, I think about the conversations that I have and much more. I have a lot of conversation with other people about my work and the works of others. I observe my surroundings acutely and it is through art that I can effectively communicate the world of my feelings and the creativity that only exists within my mind. My artwork celebrates or treasures the local, the small-scale, the eccentric, and the ordinary parts of the human experience. My artwork captures the human experience in abstract form.

2020 brings the "Year of the Artists' Vision" to Studio 74.  The year and new decade start with "Without Color", a showing of fiber art and paintings by local artists Cathy Varvis-Griffin and Diane L. Johnson-Mendes.  Inspired by the quote: "Color is descriptive.  Black and white is interpretive." by Elliot Erwitt, the January exhibition explores form, light, and shape in various mediums by both artists.  3rd Thursday Art Hop 5-8 PM, the show continues through January 31st.
