News Digest

2019 ended with a flurry of big telecom news.

The TRACED Act passed in the Senate and was signed into law on Dec 30. It mandates STIR/SHAKEN for IP networks and “reasonable measures to implement an effective call authentication framework in the non-internet protocol networks of the provider of voice service.” (emphasis added)

STIR/SHAKEN has been gaining momentum for a while—no surprise there. But what about the part in bold, the non-IP thing?

It could be Out-of-Band STIR, a way of sending the SHAKEN identity token separately across the internet. Then it wouldn’t matter what kind of network segments are used for call transit—SIP, TDM, whatever. Call authentication for everyone.

2020 is shaping up to be an interesting year.

Here are highlights of recent telecom news stories that launch us into 2020:

Odds and ends

At least 174 municipal institutions in the U. S. were targeted by ransomware in 2019, a 60 percent increase over 2018, according to Kapersky Labs, in a UPI report. Malware attacks often begin with email phishing schemes that trick employees into clicking on a link that leads to a phony site that collects info and/or loads malware. Moral of the story: get security training for your employees.
