Call for Proposals for 2020-21 ISCE Scholars Program
ISCE is accepting applications for its 2020-21 Scholars Program. This signature program provides faculty support for developing grant proposals in the social sciences, broadly defined, and consistent with ISCE’s four thematic areas and the University’s Transdisciplinary Communities. Proposed projects are expected to address critical individual and social concerns impacting the lives of people and places locally, nationally, or across the globe.The Scholars Program supports faculty to undertake work in a new or existing area, with the expectation that proposals developed through the program lead to external funding. Human Centered Communities Call for Proposals
The Intelligent Infrastructure and Human Centered Communities (IIHCC) Destination Area has issued a call for proposals for projects that involve human-centered communities, plus one or more of their thematic areas. Preference will be given to projects led by a IIHCC cluster hire as a PI or who has a significant role on the project, and to those projects that include PIs from two or more colleges. Three types of grants are available: Open calls for $50,000 and $25,000, and a call for projects in age-centered environments for up to $25,000. Click here for details.

Funding for Health Behavior Pilot/Feasibility Studies Available
In a partnership with the Carilion Clinic’s Research Acceleration Program (RAP), the Virginia Tech College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, the office of the Virginia Tech Vice President of Health Sciences and Technology, and the Center for Transformative Health Behaviors, at least 3 health behavior pilot/feasibility studies will be funded for up to $20,000/year. Funding is intended to support collaborative proposals from full-time VT faculty members and Carilion Clinic health practitioners. Click here for details.

Faculty Fellows Program to Support Transdisciplinary Courses
The Transdisciplinary Faculty Fellows Program is designed to help facilitate the creation and teaching of transdisciplinary courses, many of which are connected to the Destination Area (DA) initiative. The program is intended to provide support to faculty who want to teach outside of their home department and/or faculty who want to engage in design and implementation of transdisciplinary courses that require innovative models of faculty collaboration. Call for Letters of Intent for Early Childhood Grants
The Caplan Foundation supports development projects and promising research with the potential to significantly enhance the physical and mental health, safety, nutrition, play, social integration, and/or quality of life of children from birth through seven years of age. Letters of Intent are invited in the following categories: early child welfare; early childhood education and play; and parenting education. Click here for details.

Funding Opportunity for Health Outcomes Research
PhRMA Foundation welcomes applications for its Pharmacoeconomics, Real World Data and Health Outcomes Program, which supports a broad spectrum of issues related to healthcare delivery. Grants of up to $100,000 will be awarded in support of individuals beginning an independent research career in health outcomes at the faculty level in 3 areas: 1) Pharmoeconomics; 2) Clinical Outcomes Assessment; and 3) Patient-Level Real-World Data and Analytic Tools. Call for Proposals for Alzheimer's Related Research
The Commonwealth of Virginia Alzheimer's and Related Diseases Research Award Fund (ARDRAF) is requesting proposals for studies from Virginia universities and research organizations related to Alzheimer's disease, policies, programs and financing or social and psychological impacts. RWJF Leadership Programs
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has announced new deadlines for several of its leadership programs.
  • Culture of Health Leaders - This program is for people working in every field and profession who want to use their influence to advance health and equity. Leaders represent fields as diverse as business, technology, architecture, education, urban farming, the arts and many others. Click here for details. Deadline: February 19, 2020
     
  • Interdisciplinary Research Leaders - This program is for teams of researchers and community partners and allows them to use the power of applied research—informing and supporting critical work being done in communities—to accelerate that work and advance health and equity. Strategic Prevention Framework - Partnerships for Success Grants
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Center for Substance Abuse Prevention is accepting applications for 2020 Strategic Prevention Framework - Partnerships for Success grants. The purpose of this program is to prevent the onset and reduce the progression of substance abuse and its related problems while strengthening prevention capacity and infrastructure at the community and state level. Proposal Writing Workshop Rescheduled
The workshop for research grants for individual scholars, sponsored by the CLAHS and ISCE, originally scheduled for January 16th, has been rescheduled to
Friday, January 24th from 1:30-3:00 p.m., location TBA.


The workshop will introduce guidelines for four significant federal grants for individual scholars, review examples of proposals and describe a mentoring program for faculty planning to write proposals in Spring 2020.
Grant programs include NSF STS Scholars, NEH Public Scholars, NEH Fellowships and NLM Grants for Scholarly Works in Biomedicine and Health.

Investigator Series on Ethical Research Offered
VT Scholarly Integrity and Research Compliance (SIRC) is pleased to invite members of the research community to the SIRC Investigator Series, a six-course enrichment program that provides training on ethical decision-making in research, maintaining objectivity in research, and the ethical requirements for conducting research with human subjects.

The first training will be on January 23rd from 12:00-1:00pm in the Newman Library Multipurpose Room. Stay tuned for future series training dates. Click here to register and here for additional information.
Center for Humanities Colloquium
The Virginia Tech Center for Humanities is presenting a colloquium featuring Vinodh Ventkatesh, professor of Spanish in Modern and Classical Languages and Literature, who will present, "Madness at the Margins: Literature and Justice in Latin America," on January 24th from 12:00-1:15 p.m. in LAHS Building, Room 5. An RSVP is requested by January 19th.
SAVE THE DATE: Author Monica White to Visit Tech
Dr. White is an Associate Professor of Environmental Justice at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and the award winning author of Freedom Farmers: Agricultural Resistance and the Black Freedom Movement.  Dr. White’s visit on Thursday, Feb. 20th includes an afternoon discussion and evening public talk. Applications for NIH Summer Trainings Due Soon
  • Mixed Methods Training Program for the Health Sciences
    Selected scholars will have access to webinars and resources and attend an in-person retreat to discuss their research project and will be matched with mixed methods expert consultants.   • mHealth Training Institute
    The NIH mHealth Training Institute (mHTI) was created to serve as an incubator for developing transdisciplinary scientists capable of co-creating mHealth solutions for “wicked” healthcare problems.The week-long, residential workshop will take place at UCLA on July 26-31, 2020. Paper Competition
The OBSSR Early Stage Investigator (ESI) Paper Competition awards recognize emerging scientists whose research reflect Dr. Matilda White Riley’s vision of research excellence in health-related behavioral and social sciences. OBSSR will pay the travel expenses for up to four ESI awardees to present the findings from their accepted papers and participate in a moderated discussion during the Matilda White Riley Honors Event on June 8, 2020 at NIH. Vibrant Virginia has issued a call for book chapters for an edited collection entitled, "Vibrant Virginia: Engaging the Commonwealth to Expand Economic Vitality." Contributions are being sought from practitioners and faculty who are investigating the ties that bind people and communities across the urban-rural spectrum. The National Science Foundation has recently issued a Dear Colleague Letter on Social, Behavioral and Economic Perspectives on Graduate Education which resulted from a 2017 workshop and report.
