Dear Friends,

2020 has hardly started, but things are already hopping at Eve Goldberg world headquarters.

This weekend Gathering Sparks will be heading to Kitchener for a concert at the Registry Theatre, and then appearing in Ken Whiteley's Gospel show at Hugh's Room.

After that, I'll be heading to New Orleans for the annual Folk Alliance conference, where I'll be carrying out duties as President of Local 1000 of the musician's union (the traveling musician's local).

While I'm away, my Gathering Sparks co-conspirator Jane will be hosting Singalong Soirées in Toronto and Elora with the wonderful Katherine Wheatley.

Registration is still open for ukulele classes starting at the end of January, and for a new session of the Ukulele Orchestra starting at the beginning of February.

There is more to come beyond that, but I'll leave that for the next newsletter.

Thanks for your support, and keep singing!

Bringing in the Light Hits #1

Thanks to all the folk radio hosts who played Bringing in the Light on their shows in December, making it the #1 song on the Folk Alliance International Folk Radio Chart. What a great way to end the year! And if you missed our lyric video of the song—here's the link:

A Few of My Favourite Things

Laura Smith
The wonderful singer and performer Laura Smith recently announced that she has been diagnosed with cancer. She has had to cancel all of her upcoming shows and has limited income to get her through this period. Some of her friends have created a Go-Fund-Me page to raise money to help support her through this time, which you can donate to here. For a taste of her music, here is a live performance video of her stunning song "I Built a Boat."

Parkdale
My neighbourhood was just featured in an in-depth article in The Guardian about gentrification and how corporations are moving in. It's a sobering analysis.

The Watersons
Somehow I stumbled onto this excerpt from a BBC program about The Watersons with Martin Carthy. The Watersons portion is the first half of the video (it's followed by part of another episode featuring Alison Macmorland and Peta Webb). It includes interviews and several full song performances.
