Adult Sunday Education

Do you travel light, or tend to overpack? How many suitcases do you take with you out of town? How much luggage do you take with you each morning when you leave the house: a backpack of worry, a duffel of guilt? Come join us as we study Psalm 23 with the help of Max Lucado’s well written book: Traveling Light and learn to allow God to help us with our burdens. You do not need to purchase the book to participate. Adult Education is now in the Balcomb House behind the church, in the library down the hallway on the left on the first floor  (formerly the Children’s Chapel). Grab a cup of coffee and come join us every Sunday at 9:30. We do not meet on Breakfast Sundays. We will still be in Chapter One this coming week. Any questions, contact Jo Ellen Richardson at joellenrr@comcast.net

Better Angels Workshop

Christ's Episcopal Church in Castle Rock would like to invite you to join us for an information meeting on Better-Angels.org from 1:00 to 3:00 PM on Saturday, January 18. As we look to the upcoming elections and the divide found within our country, we are looking at ways to have meaningful and respectful conversations with those who differ from us as we strive to "seek and serve Christ in all people," and "respect the dignity of every human being."

Launched in 2016, Better Angels is a national citizens movement to bring liberals and conservatives together at the grassroots level -- not to find centrist compromise, but to find one another as citizens. Through workshops, debates, and campus engagement, Better Angels helps Americans understand each other beyond stereotypes, form community alliances, and reduce the bitterness that poisons our civic culture. Join us for this eye opening and informative meeting. ALL are welcome! RSVP to office@christepiscopalchurch.org

Midweek Worship & Discussion Group

Tuesdays at 7:00. Our Mid-week Worship and Discussion Group meets upstairs in Balcomb House. We begin with Evening Prayer and then move to a topic associated with adult spiritual development. Our goal is to offer group spiritual direction through sharing. We’ve covered topics as varied as using the Book of Common Prayer, developing a Christian Rule of Life, and meditations by CS Lewis, Mark Nepo and others. Future topics will be recommended by the group.

For this week's discussion:

We’ve been told that life experiences “build character.” Well, it’s true. And God will not save us from those experiences that build character. Here’s Mark Nepo’s take on the subject which we will discuss this coming Tuesday:

The Life of Experience
Even if one glimpses God, there are still cuts and splinters and burns along the way. So often we anticipate a reward for the uncovering of truth. For effort, we expect money and recognition. For sacrifice and kindness, we secretly expect acceptance and love. For honesty, we expect justice. Yet as we all know, the life of experience unfolds with a logic all its own. And very often, effort is seen, and kindness is embraced, and the risk of truth is held as the foundation of how humans relate. However, the reward for breathing is not applause but air, and the reward for climbing is not a promotion but new sight, and the reward for kindness is not being seen as kind, but the electricity of giving that keeps us alive. It seems the closer we get to the core of all being, the more synonymous the effort and its reward. Who could have guessed? The reward for uncovering the truth is the experience of honest being. The reward for understanding is the peace of knowing. The reward for loving is being the carrier of love. It all becomes elusively simple. The river's sole purpose is to carry water, and as the force of the water deepens and widens the riverbed, the river fulfills its purpose more. Likewise, the riverbed of the heart is worn open over time to carry what is living. All this tells us that no amount of thinking can eliminate the wonder and pain of living. No wall or avoidance or denial—no cause or excuse—can keep the rawness of life from running through us. While this may at times seem devastating, it is actually reassuring, because while the impermanence of life, if fixed on, can be terrifying, leaving us preoccupied with death, the very same impermanence, if allowed its infinite frame, can soothe us with the understanding that even the deepest pain will pass.

Centering Prayer

Centering Prayer is a renewal of an ancient form of Christian prayer. It is a method of consenting to the presence and action of Christ in the stillness of our being. It is an exercise of faith, hope and love, moving beyond conversation with Christ to communion. The fruit of this prayer is a growing sense of God’s leading us beyond anxiety into an inner stillness and peace, and outward in compassion and service. Anyone desiring to deepen his or her prayer life will benefit. For further information, please contact: Donna Gardner at: donnadgardner@q.com or 303-841-8054.

When:   Saturdays at 9:00am
Where:  Balcomb House - Children’s Chapel room on first floor.
For further information, please contact:
Donna Gardner donnadgardner@q.com or 303-841-8054.

Children’s Chapel

Children’s Chapel is for all children preschool through 3rd grade. The children join the procession at the beginning of the 10:30 am service and gather together in the Balcomb House to hear the gospel story.  From there we discuss and learn the meaning of the gospel using activities and crafts to enhance the story. The children come back to “big church” during The Peace. We always welcome additional teachers! If you would like to join the teaching team or have any questions please contact Christine Rodriguez at cricket61980@gmail.com

Readings for Sunday, January 19th

Isaiah 49:1-7

Listen to me, O coastlands,
pay attention, you peoples from far away!

The Lord called me before I was born,
while I was in my mother's womb he named me.

He made my mouth like a sharp sword,
in the shadow of his hand he hid me;

he made me a polished arrow,
in his quiver he hid me away.

And he said to me, “You are my servant,
Israel, in whom I will be glorified.”

But I said, “I have labored in vain,
I have spent my strength for nothing and vanity;

yet surely my cause is with the Lord,
and my reward with my God.”

And now the Lord says,
who formed me in the womb to be his servant,

to bring Jacob back to him,
and that Israel might be gathered to him,

for I am honored in the sight of the Lord,
and my God has become my strength--

he says,

“It is too light a thing that you should be my servant
to raise up the tribes of Jacob
and to restore the survivors of Israel;

I will give you as a light to the nations,
that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth.”

Thus says the Lord,
the Redeemer of Israel and his Holy One,

to one deeply despised, abhorred by the nations,
the slave of rulers,

“Kings shall see and stand up,
princes, and they shall prostrate themselves,

because of the Lord, who is faithful,
the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen you.”

Psalm 40:1-12

Expectans, expectavi

1 I waited patiently upon the Lord; *
he stooped to me and heard my cry.

2 He lifted me out of the desolate pit, out of the mire and clay; *
he set my feet upon a high cliff and made my footing sure.

3 He put a new song in my mouth,
a song of praise to our God; *
many shall see, and stand in awe,
and put their trust in the Lord.

4 Happy are they who trust in the Lord! *
they do not resort to evil spirits or turn to false gods.

5 Great things are they that you have done, O Lord my God!
how great your wonders and your plans for us! *
there is none who can be compared with you.

6 Oh, that I could make them known and tell them! *
but they are more than I can count.

7 In sacrifice and offering you take no pleasure *
(you have given me ears to hear you);

8 Burnt-offering and sin-offering you have not required, *
and so I said, "Behold, I come.

9 In the roll of the book it is written concerning me: *
'I love to do your will, O my God;
your law is deep in my heart."'

10 I proclaimed righteousness in the great congregation; *
behold, I did not restrain my lips;
and that, O Lord, you know.

11 Your righteousness have I not hidden in my heart;
I have spoken of your faithfulness and your deliverance; *
I have not concealed your love and faithfulness from the great congregation.

12 You are the Lord;
do not withhold your compassion from me; *
let your love and your faithfulness keep me safe for ever,

1 Corinthians 1:1-9

Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and our brother Sosthenes,

To the church of God that is in Corinth, to those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, together with all those who in every place call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours:

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that has been given you in Christ Jesus, for in every way you have been enriched in him, in speech and knowledge of every kind-- just as the testimony of Christ has been strengthened among you-- so that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ. He will also strengthen you to the end, so that you may be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful; by him you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

John 1:29-42

John saw Jesus coming toward him and declared, “Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who ranks ahead of me because he was before me.’ I myself did not know him; but I came baptizing with water for this reason, that he might be revealed to Israel.” And John testified, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ And I myself have seen and have testified that this is the Son of God.”

The next day John again was standing with two of his disciples, and as he watched Jesus walk by, he exclaimed, “Look, here is the Lamb of God!” The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. When Jesus turned and saw them following, he said to them, “What are you looking for?” They said to him, “Rabbi” (which translated means Teacher), “where are you staying?” He said to them, “Come and see.” They came and saw where he was staying, and they remained with him that day. It was about four o’clock in the afternoon. One of the two who heard John speak and followed him was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. He first found his brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which is translated Anointed). He brought Simon to Jesus, who looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You are to be called Cephas” (which is translated Peter).
