Finding Community in a New Country

Greater Hartford is home to many global companies, and with that comes a global workforce. Originally from Germany, Susanne and her husband moved to CT after his company assigned him to their U.S. office for three years. The transition for Susanne was a bit challenging, but she found a community of folks who were willing to help when she came to LVGH.

Upon recommendation from a friend of hers from Switzerland in a similar situation, Susanne reached out and enrolled in our English for Speakers of Other Languages class. “When I started, my first impressions were of the kind employees. I very much admired the excellent work of the volunteers and the whole staff”.

Her favorite part of being a student here was having conversations with her classmates and teachers, which she said helped to “maintain the fun of learning” while she improved her grammar and began to speak English more confidently.

We are sad that her time at LVGH has ended, as Susanne and her husband recently returned to Germany. “I will definitely miss the motivating and patient teachers and the helpful crew at LVGH,” says Susanne, “and I would definitely recommend LVGH to anyone. I enjoyed learning about your amazing country!”

Empowering Female Students with Voxy

Of the 43 million adults in the U.S. who are low literate, 65% of them are women (ProLiteracy). A new partnership between Lancôme USA and ProLiteracy is trying to change that. Through their partnership, they offered adult education programs the opportunity to apply for free subscriptions for female students to Voxy, a personalized language learning platform that pairs authentic content with personalized live instruction. LVGH is so pleased to have been accepted into this program. Our students were eager to sign up for Voxy and to explore this new way of language learning in the computer lab and even on their own phones. We thank Lancôme USA and ProLiteracy for investing in women’s literacy and for working to ensure that all women have the educational tools they need to be successful.

December Fundraising Events

Building Connections at Barnes & Noble

Even amidst last month's holiday madness, some of our wonderful volunteers took the time to help us out with a Gift Wrapping Fundraiser at West Hartford's Barnes & Noble. We wrapped gifts, collected donations, and shared with shoppers what we do here at LVGH. A portion of proceeds from that day's in-store sales were donated to us, as well!

Meanwhile, our friends over at UCONN Hartford's Barnes & Noble held a month-long book drive to collect new and used books for our students. They dropped off twenty boxes filled with books of all genres for all ages! Our students are so excited to practice their reading skills with some new books.

Thank you to Barnes & Noble and to all of our volunteers and supporters for two successful events!

If you didn't get a chance to attend, consider clicking here to view our volunteer opportunities or here to donate to our cause!
