Dear Saints,

This Sunday, in addition to our Epiphany season liturgy, we will also be celebrating the life and work of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in our prayers, songs and sermon. In the Episcopal Church, Martin Luther King is a recognized martyr, and there is actually a feast day for him that can be observed on Jan 15 or April 4. You can read a homily from our previous Presiding Bishop, Katherine Jefferts Shori, on how his radically non-violent form of gospel love changed the world by clicking
here. There's also a special city-wide tribute happening at Highland UCC on Monday (more info below).

Next Sunday we will hold our Annual Meeting. We’ll begin with a pasta & salad lunch after the 10:15 service (bring a salad to share if you can), and the meeting itself will start around noon. Both the lunch and meeting are open to everyone. We’d love to have you there as we look at highlights from 2019 and preview things to look forward to in the coming year.

In Peace,

The Rev. Andria Skornik

email.

Spirit: Your desire to prepare for and care for All Saints Episcopal Church. Please consider joining us. We welcome you and we need you!
Adult Forum Series - “Biblical Literature: Foreign, Familiar, Formative”: Join us for an introductory series on the Bible, exploring the ways in which the Bible is simultaneously distant from our modern sensibilities, recognizable as an artifact of culture, and necessary to our lives of faith. We aim to tackle issues such as how many bibles are there, what’s in the Bible, what do we mean by inspiration, how is the Bible formed, etc. Adult Forum begins every Sunday at 9:15 AM in the Parish Hall. Childcare is available. Grab some coffee and join the conversation!
Weekday Bible Study: We are now holding Bible Study on Wednesday’s at 10:30am in the Guild Room. We will be using the text published by Forward Movement, “Bible Women: All Their Words and Why they Matter” by Lindsay Hardin Freeman. As before, the bible study is now open to both men and women. Join us!

Wednesday Service with Eucharist: We are happy to announce that a weekly noon Eucharistic service will be offered in the All Saints chapel. Immediately following the service, we will gather for a brown bag lunch for a time of fellowship in the parish hall. Join us!
Welcoming Children in Worship: In the last year we have been fortunate to welcome a number of new children and young families and introduce a new soft space that has been well received.  As part of this ongoing conversation and aspiration, if you have any ideas or concerns about how we continue to welcome children in worship,  please reach out to Rev. Andria.
Hot Meals Volunteers Needed: We need volunteers for the 5th Saturday Hot Meals Program. At this time, we have a couple who are willing to be the cooks, but we still need two dishwashers and six people for set up and cleanup. Please let Nancy Patrick or the church office know if you can help. Thank you.

“We have not developed much of a religion of meaning around climate change that might comfort us, or give us purpose, in the face of possible annihilation. But climate scientists have a strange kind of faith: We will find a way to forestall radical warming, they say, because we must.”

Mustard Seed News: The Mustard Seed & Book Nook reopens this Friday, January 17th. Thank you for all your donations of time talent and merchandise, they are greatly appreciated.

We are looking for volunteers willing to commit to one Saturday a month for 2 to 4 hours, especially the 3rd and 4th Saturdays of the month and "vacation" coverage for Fridays so "on call".

Duties include: being cashier, sorting and pricing, general tidying and having a good time with your other volunteers. On Saturdays, our Hot Meals guest can be rambunctious, but they are also looking for assistance at the St. Francis Closet, a listening ear, some general pleasant social interactions and weekly check-ins with us. This is also true of our regular customers, they come for the social interaction as well as the bargain shopping.  We train you for any of these tasks as we all started as beginners. Men and women welcome.

Are you a carpenter?  Would you be willing to construct some "Powell's bookstore like" bookshelves for the Mustard Seed & Book Nook? They need to be sturdy, wide at the base, tall, and able to be fastened to the wall to prevent being pulled over. We would like to rearrange some of our display areas and maximize our book shelving.  If interested, contact
Sonja.
An Interfaith Gathering to Pray for Peace
January 6, 2020
Blessed are the peacemakers: All Saints Episcopal Church hosted an interfaith candlelit service  as people gathered to pray for peace. Over 100 prayerful protesters, including over 25 faith leaders, gathered at All Saints Episcopal Church to pray for peace in our world. Along with Mother Andria, other faith leaders at this gathering were Leroy Barber of The Voices Project, Alli Dahlgren of Imago Dei, Adam Phillips from Christ Church PDX, Portland Mennonite staff, Jan Elfers of Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon, Wajdi Said of Muslim Educational Trust, Rick McKinley of Imago Dei, Martha Wood of West Hills Friends, Rabbi Benjamin BarnettImam from Havurah Shalom, the Rev. Matthew David Morris of St. Michaels and All Angels, Imam Abdulah Polovina from Bosniaks Educational and Cultural Organization, Mark Knutson of Augustana Lutheran, and more.

For many, this was a balm during these troubled times. "May peace, and peace, and peace be everywhere." This is our prayer. The vigil was just one of many held at places of worship around the country, as well as in front of the White House.

You can watch the news reports here and here.

A Tribute to the Life & Legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

World Arts Foundation, Inc. presents its 35th consecutive Tribute to Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. undoubtedly one of the great American heroes and world citizens.  The 2020 tribute will include speakers, arts, and musical tributes to local artists whose contributions have put Portland on the map and will last a lifetime.

Portland's Annual “Keep Alive the Dream” is recognized regionally and nationally as one of the largest community-based celebrations in the U.S.  World Arts Foundation, Inc. humbly offers giving its voice to the heritage of ordinary citizens’ struggle for peace, social justice, civil rights, and human dignity.

The entire program will honor Martin Luther King, Jr.  by showcasing a variety of outstanding expressions in song, oration, dance and drumming.  Program format will include digital media, high definition tape-delayed broadcast, and live artistic presentations commemorating the life and legacy of Rev.  Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.   Program participation will include an array of community speakers from various civic and social community organizations.

Invited Guests will include Angela Brown (International Opera Star) and DaNell Daymon & Greater Works Choir (NBC "America’s Got Talent" Semi-Finalist, 2017).  A variety of talented local and regional performances and speakers include Bravo; The American Music Program; Beaumont MS; Senator Lew Frederick; Mayor Ted Wheeler; KairosPDX; Sebe Kan Jr. Dance Troupe, Embrace, Ballet Papalotl, as well as local student groups and choirs from Portland Public Schools, including Beaumont Middle School and the nationally acclaimed Jefferson Dancers.
St Francis Closet:  Many thanks to those who have responded to my call for socks, blankets, and other things for the St. Francis Closet, a room in our church thrift store that provides clothing and other items for those in distress. Since many people have asked how to help with this ongoing need, here is a list of ways:

1.    Donate money and designate it for the “Deacon’s Discretionary Account” or “St. Francis Closet.”

2.    Donate clothing and other items: Used clothing you no longer wear. Soaps and shampoos from your latest hotel stay. Items from your last visit to the dentist. A tattered but warm blanket.

3.    Shop for items at your favorite thrift/discount/bargain store, even online. (Please ask Deacon Kathleen for suggestions.)

4.    Occasional help with simple mending.

5.    Assist safely “behind the scenes” in the St. Francis Closet as Kathleen waits on “customers” at the counter. Any amount of time on Saturdays, 11-3, is appreciated. (Great volunteer experience for students!)

6.    Tell others about the many outreach ministries at All Saints.

7.    Pray daily for the needy and all who care for them.

How to Help Neighbors in Distress:

If you see someone outside unsheltered whose life appears to be in danger or is in an apparent medical crisis, call 911. Otherwise, if you see someone about whom you are concerned, such as not being dressed for the weather conditions, call police non-emergency (503) 823-3333 and request a welfare check for that person.

To help someone find shelter and arrange transportation to shelter, please call 211.

People seeking to get warm on winter days when warming shelters are not open are welcome in government buildings that are open to the public, including, for example, libraries and community centers. Library hours are listed on Multnomah County Library’s
website. City community center information is listed here

During nights when severe weather has been declared, no one seeking shelter will be turned away.
