Pushing Boundaries:
An Endurance Coaching Journal for Time-Crunched Professionals

“If you can't fly, then run. If you can't run, then walk. If you can't walk, then crawl, but by all means, keep moving." -Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Great leaders inspire action with their intelligence, determination, authenticity, empathy - to name just a few traits. Next Monday, January 20, we will honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., one of the greatest American Leaders. In honoring him, we can study and apply some of his most admirable, action-inspiring qualities to our everyday life. As athletes, how can we adopt these qualities to better our training and racing performance?

Hope you enjoy this tribute to the great MLK!

Empower Your Inner Athlete With These 6 Leadership Traits

What I'm Reading

How to Stick to a New Training Plan, from Outside, caught my attention, as I'm forever collecting tips from other athletes about habit formation. Along these lines, my partner at GritLink forwarded me this episode of the Hidden Brain podcast to listen to, about habit creation. Full disclosure, I haven't had a chance to listen to it yet, but am in the middle of writing a new article about new habits, so I'm sure this will come in handy!

Maybe you've come across this advice before, and chose to ignore because it sounds... well... totally BORING. But running slow is the #1 way to develop the muscular durability, aerobic foundation, and body awareness. Give it a try - I actually think you'll LOVE it! My coach makes me do this, and I have grown to love these long, slow runs.

20% off Ironman 70.3 Victoria Training Plan
If you have been wanting to do a half iron, but the thought of the swim makes you anxious, this is the plan for you. It is available now in the Training Peaks store, and was designed for athletes from a running and cycling background.

I had two runners successfully use this plan last year in Victoria. If you don't think you can do this, then you need to read this guest blog post about how one of these amazing athletes overcame her fear of the water to complete her first 70.3.
