Hello Listeners!

Oh, geez, it's Tuesday (just barely), and I still need to get out the newsletter. Pardon the tardiness....I had a last-minute long weekend in Las Vegas to surprise Ma Jaracz for her 80th birthday and spent four days hanging out with her and a couple of her friends. I had a great time--and even had an Olympic moment! We saw Human Nature (a 90s boy band from Australia) perform Motown--and guess what? They also performed the national anthem at the Sydney 2000 Olympics! Maybe we'll be able to get them on the show....the idea of an Olympic Fever Boy Band sounds kind of fun to me!

Hey, one quick favor: If you like this newsletter, please pass it on to a few friends. It being an Olympic year, we want to make sure we find all of our people before Tokyo 2020.

Thank you!

A Peek Behind the Olympic Fever Curtain

We're excited to have another contributor on the Olympic Fever podcasting team! I hope you enjoyed Film Buff Fran's debut, where we talked about Chariots of Fire.

I'm still kind of amazed that an Olympics allowed advertising in its stadiums--but not surprised that it instituted a "clean venue policy" right away. I remember watching the PyeongChang Olympics and appreciating the lack of ads -- though it's also a fantasy world that sports could exist without advertising support (I'd also say that there's some pretty clever sports event advertising out there....I'm particularly fond of BMW's advertising on the biathlon World Cup circuit).

This element requires a much deeper look, but there's a book by Andre M. Louw called Ambush Marketing & the Mega-Event Monopoly: How Laws are Abused to Protect Commercial Rights to Major Sporting Events that says Juan Antonio Samaranch apparently asked Coke how much more it would pay "if the IOC were to allow venue advertising. Coke threatened to cancel its Olympic sponsorships if the IOC ever scrapped the clean venue policy as it would change 'what makes the Games so special'." (see p. 59)

Who's surprised that Samaranch would suggest this? And who's surprised that our list of things to research just got longer?

Don't forget! Our next movie club film is "Miracle," about the Miracle on Ice hockey game at Lake Placid 1980. We're talking about it on February 20, right around the 40th anniversary of that match. Let us know what you think of it! Or if you have a movie we should watch for the podcast, please drop us a line and suggest it.

Listener Meredith shared this week's favorite Olympic moment, Laura Wilkinson's amazing gold medal performance at Sydney 2000. You heard about it on the show, now watch it!

  • The Suspect, of course!
  • Sprockets of Fire, Listener Don and his wife Liz's journey through the Criterion Olympic film collection. Good timing--they're talking about Paris 1924 soon!
  • This is an interesting profile of 1996 Olympic swimmer David Fox and his post-Olympic career.

Tell a Friend!

I know I said it earlier, but we know there are more of our people out there. 2020 means more people care about the Olympics, which means even more fans we can get geeky with. Help us find them! Share this newsletter, tell someone about the show or post about us on social. We'd appreciate it, and thank you so much for your support!
