COMMUNITY WORK DAY

Thank you to all the volunteers who came out last Sunday morning to help work on projects around the school. We installed window shades in the music room, swapped out a whiteboard or two, install TVs, cleaned out closets, made plans for the teachers' lounge, broke down and recycled a million cardboard boxes and much more! Well done, everyone! And thank you to parents John Claisse and Sarah Earl-Novell for organizing.

MLK ORATORICAL FESTIVAL

Is your Knight interested in performing a published or original speech or poem for Claremont's MLK Oratorical? Practice is every Thursday during lunch and this is the last week to sign up. 6th & 7th graders should go to Ms. Lozito's room and 8th graders to Ms. Thomas' classroom during lunch today (Thursday). The competition is after school on Jan 30th. The winners will perform that night at the Historical Literacy Knight and go on the the district competition in February.

HISTORICAL LITERACY KNIGHT

CMS Historical Literacy Knight will take place on Thursday, January 30, from 5-7 pm (right after the Oratorical). There will be food, raffle prizes, workshop stations and live performances by our own MLK Oratorical Festival finalists. Come help us celebrate reading and writing at Claremont Middle School! We are accepting donations of gently used, high interest young adult novels and graphic novels in our main office for our book giveaway. For more info, go here. Interested in volunteering? Please contact Fiona.

HELP CALIFORNIA SECURE $4 BILLION A YEAR IN EDUCATION FUNDING

California public schools are severely underfunded, ranking 39th in the nation in per-pupil spending, with the largest number of students per teacher and fewest counselors per student. But in November 2020, we have the opportunity to reclaim $11 billion a year to ensure that our schools and communities have the resources needed to educate our kids and support vital community services.

The Schools and Communities First initiative restores over $11 billion every year in revenue for our schools and local communities by assessing commercial and industrial property at fair market value, with NO changes to residential or small business taxes. It would provide an estimated $40 million dollars of new funding each year for Oakland public schools.

When: Monday, February 5th, 6:30-7:30
Where: Oakland Tech’s Auditorium
Who: Ben Grieff, Campaign Director for Evolve California (www.evolve-ca.org), will host a detailed presentation followed by a Q&A.

Sponsored by the Oakland Tech High School PTSA

This event is open to ALL OUSD families and Oakland residents, so please spread the word. Need Child Care? Email jsgray1204@gmail.com. Questions? Email Star Lightner starlightner@gmail.com
