FEATURING
MATHEMATICS

A few weeks ago we asked the students to write about why mathematics is useful in life. It is important that they understand why they are learning these skills and tools. They took on the task and we had over a 100 works to choose from. It was hard to decide which one to show but here are a few of them. We hope you enjoy reading them.

SPARX - Mathematics re-imagined, the socially focused learning technology

So, your child has a homework in Mathematics… It is a common strategy for teachers to implement this important part of the learning process. Ideally students should review topics at home that the teachers covered during the lessons.  Our experience shows that students who do review (even if it means glancing over the notes) and practice mathematical skills, they do better than students who do not.

Imagine that you, as a parent are able to see this homework any time and get instant feedback on your child's progress in Mathematics. Even better, imagine that these mathematical problems are tailored to your child's needs.

After the white week we will introduce a new approach to teaching maths from grade 6 until grade 10. It is an online teaching platform, called Sparx. The math teachers will continue teaching in class as before, but the students’ homework will be given by this program based on the previously set up topics by the teachers. Everybody will get personalized exercises according to their level of understanding, which will be tested by the program initially.
Sparx has been used all around the United Kingdom in independent and state schools showing an outstanding result and SEK Budapest will be the first to introduce it in Hungary.
You are able to read about this system on this website: https://sparx.co.uk/maths/.

Further information will be sent by e-mail to parents.

A következőknek is örülnek, ha beleteszed a táskába: hajbalzsam, dezodor, kézkrém, kézfertőtlenítő, testápoló, nedves törlőkendő, szájvíz, ajakbalzsam, hajgumi, hajkefe, kedves személyes üzenet tőled.
Tisztítószereket most nem gyűjtünk!

SHARING IS CARING!

Our school, SEK BUDAPEST International School decided to join the #nemluxustaska (not a luxury bag) fundraiser campaign. The fundraiser targets women who does not have access to everyday life hygiene products. In consequence, we kindly ask everyone who has the opportunity, to help. You may wonder, how can I help? Simply get a bag that is in a good condition and you don’t need it anymore and fill it with almost anything you find on your Bathroom self. Try finding vital products that women use daily: Shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, toothbrush, soap, shower gel, pads. The following items will make them happy too: Tissues, lip balm, deodorant, hand cream, lotion, hand sanitizer, wet wipes, hair ties, brush, a personal note from you. This time we are not collect cleaning supplies! In case you don’t have a spare bag or on the contrary and you only have a bag that you can donate, don’t worry we will help and sort each donation out into packages. Each and every donation counts! Let’s demonstrate that we care, and help the ones in need! We will be collecting the donations that will be located next to the vending machine until the 30th of January (Thursday, Noon) We thank you in advance!

LITERATURE CORNER
Three of our 9 grade students: Julianna Hernandez-Teniza, Izabelle Edina Péter and Jenna Yang  prepared a lapbook* from the novel by Lois Lowry (The Giver)** for the Literature class. They were writing about the theme, the main characters, apart of the introduction and summary of the novel. The lapbook was in 3D and illustrated by handmade drawings. They all got 5. Well done girls!

FROM OUR PARENTS
So far the time my children spent in SEK has been a very positive experience for both of them. The institution is very inclusive, they are happy to go to school and almost everyone knows them, they are also personally known not only by all their teachers but also by everyone who works there. We feel that the SEK is really paying attention to the children and parents.

About the education, they are given many colorful assignments, projects, and special attention to the development of their personality. Developing self-reflection, problem-solving as well as taking responsibility which is extremely important. We had not experienced this in other educational institutions, but here in the SEK it works fantastic. We are pleased that our children's teachers are young, enthusiastic and talented teachers. We find it effective, successful and, as parents of twins, to have a common tutor made it easy for them and for us to integrate, learn, accept and meet expectations. Miss. Kiki has a colorful, impulsive, positive personality, yet a consistent attitude that inspires our children. The whole SEK School radiates the same experience. If we have any request and we contact the secretariat, we always get the help needed. The headteacher, Gabriella, is visibly present in school life, she is there every morning when the children arrive, keeps an eye on the children and maintains a relationship with the parents. It is also great that the institution provides high quality piano and guitar education locally for children by an Argentine guitarist!
Our children have evolved a lot, they have become much more open and confident than before. They enjoy joint activities, lectures and excursions. As a parent we were fascinated by their performance in 3 languages at the Winter Festival and they are liberated, full of joy and experience. We, as parents, have experience in the Hungarian and British education systems and believe that what SEK represents is the best combination of these.
Thank you for your kind welcome, all the community experience and your fantastic pedagogical work!

We would like to be part of this for a long time.

ART CORNER
Digital drawing doesn't have to start on a computer! If you are more comfortable with kicking off with the good-old pencil on paper method, you can easily do that! First, draw your outlines and make sure you use a black felt tip pen or any other tool that leaves a consistent mark. After this take a photo with your phone: make it sharp, make it consistent, shadows will NOT help you, so don't use your flash function!
Next step: send it to your own email! Download it and put into a picture editing software. I use photoshop. It is pretty great :) First, you set the contrast really high, to make your drawing crisp. Then you can choose endless options. In this afterschool curricular lesson, we selected the blackoutlines and could easily fill in everything around it without having to worry about our lines! (hit control+shift+c to select the complete silhouette!) What is great about digital art is, that you can change anything in an instant, you can even make many different versions based on the same design!

Outdoor Learning

What a beautiful day to step outside our classroom and observe how the plants and animals of a specific place interact with each other. On the soccer field we identified insects, birds, and reptiles, as well as palm trees, trees, and shrubs. We learned about food chains and how all plants and animals depend on each other to create a balanced and healthy living system.

Role-plays in class

A fun way to practice speaking in class is to have the students make a Role-Play. During this MYP unit, students investigated tips for a successful job interview so they act and film.
First, they selected a company and decided a position that would require a new opening. Then they had to set the requirements for that position, and the activities and skills needed to fulfill that vacancy.
Once they had that information, they proceeded to investigate the best tips to have a great job interview. Then they started to write a script to film their role-play and organized the characters and setting. They also thought about the costumes they will wear to become the characters.
Finally, they recorded the interview in school and had fun with their friends while they practicing English.
This activity makes the students play with their imagination and is an entertaining way of practicing speaking.
