Dr. George’s paper, “Importance of Outcome Domain for Patients With Musculoskeletal Pain: Characterizing Subgroups and Their Response to Treatment” was published in the PTJ on January 16, 2020.

Departmental Research Day and Symposium (Fourth Annual) J. Leonard Goldner Visiting Professorship
The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is hosting its Fourth Annual Research Day and Symposium on Tuesday, April 21, 2020. If you are interested in presenting a poster during both the morning and afternoon poster sessions, please complete the Qualtrics survey no later than Thursday, March 12. Poster(s) should be brought to the Duke Health Interprofessional Education Building (Suite 1225A) the morning of the event no later than 8:45 a.m.

There will be an award (must be present to win and have presented poster(s) during both sessions) for each of the following three categories;
1) Post-Doctoral Fellow
2) Graduate Student/Medical Student/Staff or
3) Resident/Fellow
Faculty are welcome to participate but won't be eligible to win an award.

DPT Integ Week

The DPT Class of 2022 studied Foundational Integumentary (wound care) with Dr. Alan Lee (’94) during Integ Week. Dr. Lee will receive the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Duke Physical Therapy Alumni Assocation at CSM in mid-February. This is the third year that Dr. Lee has come from his home in California to teach the course.
  
Dr. Ben Alman Research featured on School of Medicine Blog
A recent study led by Dr. Ben Alman was published in Nature Cell Biology on January 6, providing new insights on the origin of cells that regulate the pace of healing and may explain why healing takes longer as people get older.

GME Second Look Weekend
Duke Orthopaedics was well represented at the Duke Graduate Medical Education dinner/gala at the JB Duke Hotel on Saturday, January 25. Shown from left to right: Doctors Edward Baldwin, III (Resident), Erica Taylor (Orthopaedic Surgery Vice Chair of Diversity and Inclusion), Melissa Erickson (Faculty), Brittany DeClouette (Applicant), and Robert Fitch (Program Director).

The second look weekend is part of the Residency Program in Orthopaedic Surgery and Duke University Health System’s effort and commitment to recruit and retain residents and faculty who are under-represented in medicine. The weekend’s agenda includes social activities, an opportunity to visit the medical center, time to meet with additional trainees and faculty members, and time to explore the area. 
 
Grand Rounds are held in Lecture Hall 1250 at the Duke Health Interprofessional Education (IPE) Building on Wednesdays from 6:30–7:30 a.m.

Translating Duke Health: Open Requests for Proposals
 
The Translating Duke Health Initiative (TDH) is a multi-disciplinary, multi-year commitment to harness the expertise and knowledge found at Duke to address society’s most significant scientific and healthcare challenges and fulfill the vision of making discoveries and transforming health for millions. Each of the five pillars has annual RFPs, and the Immunology and Children’s Health and Discovery Initiative both currently have open calls for applications. For more details about TDH, visit www.translatingdukehealth.org
 
Pilot Project Grants in Innovative Approaches Combining Computational Techniques and Immunology Research, due February 17, 2020
The Immunology and Transplant Initiative has a focus on cross-cutting paradigms in transplantation tolerance, tumor, autoimmunity, and protective immunity, with an overall goal to invest in transformative areas of research and technology where Duke Health can have the greatest impact on human health. The intent of this call for applications is encourage interdisciplinary team approaches integrating immunological and quantitative research. Applicants are also encouraged to take advantage of available biobank samples and Duke Core facilities. Funding is up to $100,000 in total costs; G&A will be applied.  Click here to see the full RFP.
 
CHDI Faculty Fellows Program, due April 15, 2020
Children’s Health and Discovery Initiative (CHDI) announces a request for research applications to the CHDI Faculty Fellows Program, a year-long program to help Duke researchers develop grant applications to support research that investigates early life origins of disease. The goals of this RFA are to promote the development of externally funded research into the early life origins of health and disease, support new investigators in obtaining NIH (or equivalent funding), and to develop new multidisciplinary collaborations that leverage Duke’s unique resources and expertise.  Click here to see the full RFP.
