Madison Region Home to Top Economic Development Deals of 2019

Breast surgery device by company with UW founders now in use

Madison tops cities with the best work-life balance in SmartAsset study

Madison, Wisconsin takes the top spot in SmartAsset study on the best cities for work-life balance. It ranks in the top 10% of the study for six out of the 10 metrics considered.

To find the cities with the best work-life balance, SmartAsset compared data for the 100 largest cities across the following 10 metrics: entertainment establishment density, dining establishment density, bar density, housing costs as a percentage of income, average number of weeks worked per year, average number of hours worked per week, average commute time, percentage of workers with commutes over an hour, unemployment rate and labor force participation rate.

Wisconsin students perfect breathing device for pediatric surgeries

University of Wisconsin pediatric anesthesiologist Lana Volz found herself in the unenviable positions of having to deal with a cumbersome, unreliable respiration apparatus component, known as a wye, during sensitive surgeries at American Family Children’s Hospital.

Faced with an untenable situation, Volz turned to the Biomedical Engineering (BME) Design program at Wisconsin. During the program design sequence, students in this program are tasked with creating workable solutions to unmet medical needs.

10 Tech Trends From the Decade That Was … and What Will Be

As we kick off 2020 — both a new year, and a new decade — it makes sense to take a step back, reflect on what’s happened, and identify some of the trends worth keeping an eye on.

Although we’ve come a long way, the next decade will likely bring about even more transformative change. Some of the ideas I outlined nearly four years ago when I wrote the book The Third Wave are well underway, and others are just starting to pick up steam.

This week, I’ll plan to share — in no particular order — two tech trends each day that I am keeping an eye on as we enter this next decade. We’ll kick it off with sectors many of us may be thinking about as we contemplate New Year’s resolutions: health, wellness, and diet.

The goal of the Wisconsin Tech Summit is to bring together major companies and emerging firms in a setting that allows them to meet and explore likely business relationships around technology needs and innovation. Major companies will hear from emerging firms with innovative products or services tied to areas such as “big data,” connected devices and data analytics in sectors ranging from health care to information systems, and from power electronics to telecommunications.

To foster this type of communication, the Tech Summit features pre-scheduled, 15-minute strategic meetings between major firms and emerging companies. This format resembles a “speed dating” exercise, allowing both parties to learn more about the needs and developments of the other.
