A manned submersible that goes to 6,500 meters discovered a 'petit-spot' volcano along the oldest section of the Pacific tectonic plate. The young volcano provides insight into the largely unknown asthenosphere, the uppermost part of the Earth's mantle that drives plate tectonics.
