BRRRR, the cold and grey days of January are thankfully an introduction to new things to come.

Speaking of new things, starting January 13th, I Beth Mickelsen will be the new Store manager at Ashland Greenhouses.  I have worked in the greenhouse industry for more than 10 years, cultivating a love for plants and their strengths and weaknesses. I love plants, all shapes, sizes, and colors. I can help you find the right plant for the right place. Remember January 13th we open for the 2020 season. Come see me.

Also new to Ashland Greenhouses is Megan our new Wholesale manager, and long-term employee Michael has a new position as Production manager.  We are all excited to serve your needs.

Now that I’ve got the introductions out of the way, on to things you can do in January.
  1. Watch for that week of warm weather in January to walk around the garden and see life springing up from the bulbs you planted last fall. Crocus and snowdrops will show their heads soon.
  2. Hellebores will be blooming in January, bring them in for a bouquet.
  3. January is a great time to force cuttings. Use sharp clippers that make a clean cut on shrubs and vines. Forsythia, Witch hazel, Redbud, Magnolia, Pussy willow, Red twig Dogwood.
  4. Look for dead or dying branches while your deciduous shrubs and trees have lost their leaves.
  5. Sharpen your garden tools. Take care of broken of damaged tools. Garden centers will have all the newest parts and styles.
  6. Add a new garden book to your collection.
  7. Give your garden hoses a once over. Replace bent ends and washers. Again garden centers are a great resource.

While you sit and stare out the window with a hot cup of cocoa, and a garden magazine on your lap, start a list of plants you desire for spring. Bring your list by Ashland Greenhouse and let us fill it.

Items we can fill immediately include primroses, cyclamen, pansies, early perennials, early herbs, and violas.

See you soon,

Beth Mickelsen
