Hi everyone,

The number of international students in Canada has been rapidly increasing during the last five years and continues to grow. Moreover, the 2018 International Students Survey conducted by the Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE) also shows that 60% of all respondents indicated their intention to apply for permanent resident status in Canada.

This means that every year Canadian post-secondary institutions in Ontario are welcoming larger cohorts that require settlement support, orientation on immigration pathways and connections to the services available to them in the community.

International Student Connect (ISC) project was developed in 2014 with the impetus to serve international students across the province, a task that that we have been carrying out in partnership with settlement agencies and educational institutions.

This past quarter (September-December) we delivered 152 sessions and served 1,232 students across Ontario. Below is a summary of the great work that all of our partners have done since the inception of ISC.

BMRC-IRMU: Discussing International Students' Resilience and Settlement Pathways in Canada

Building Migrant Resilience in Cities (BMRC-IRMU) is a research partnership and a multi-sector collaboration that is creating new knowledge about emerging trends in international migration and resilience; deepening the links among academics, non-profits and government; and creating new synergies that benefit from each sector’s distinct knowledge and expertise.

On November 29, 2019 BMRC-IRMU organized the Student Pathways and Supports in Canada event to discuss perspectives on supporting international students’ resilience, employment, and transition to permanent residence.

The ISC team was invited to present the ISC project and participate in the interactive exchange about international students in Canada.

What is International Student Connect?

International Student Connect (ISC) is a bilingual pilot project that provides settlement support and orientation to international students pursuing a post-secondary education in Ontario. It is coordinated by COSTI Immigrant Services and funded by the Government of Ontario.

Our goal is to help international students integrate successfully should they choose to settle in Ontario after graduation. Information is provided through 1-2 hours Let’s Connect sessions or One-On-one sessions at Colleges and Universities.

Check out the ISC Handbook and learn more about the project here.
