Newmarket seeking proposals for creative re-use of
Old Fire Hall on Main Street

Town continues to drive economic development efforts in downtown
The Old Fire Hall at 140 Main Street is located at the corner of Millard Avenue and Newmarket’s award-winning Main Street.
NEWMARKET, Ontario, January 10, 2020 – This week the Town of Newmarket issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) for the adaptive re-use of the Old Fire Hall property, located at 140 Main Street (the corner of Main Street and Millard Avenue.) The Town hopes to secure a long-term lease for the property for commercial use that is consistent with the Town’s vision and plans for the continued development of Main Street and downtown Newmarket.

“The Old Fire Hall presents a very unique opportunity to continue to build on the momentum of our award-winning Main Street,” says Newmarket Mayor John Taylor. “We are very proud of our downtown and the revitalization efforts that have made it an attractive gathering place not only for our residents, but for people well beyond our community. We look forward to all of the innovative ideas that come forward and to seeing what the future holds for this landmark property.”

The Old Fire Hall is a very unique 5,000 square foot property in downtown Newmarket with significant potential to enhance the vibrancy of Main Street and act as a catalyst for further development north on Main Street towards Davis Drive. Located in close proximity to key cultural sites, community facilities, shops and restaurants, this site has unlimited potential for the town, both economically and culturally.

The proposals will be evaluated based on how they address the following goals and objectives;
  • Provides a benefit or service to the community, which includes improved activation on Main Street and cultural enhancement in the downtown.
  • Complements existing economic development and planning strategies of the Town as well as Business Improvement Area (BIA) initiatives and strategies.
  • Provides financial contributions through the lease (such as renovations) to accommodate the proposed commercial use as well as capital /lease contributions that will eliminate current Town expenditures on the property.
The Old Fire Hall was constructed in 1952 and occupied as a fire hall for the majority of its lifespan. It has seen various uses over the years and is currently vacant and awaiting the next chapter.

Proposals will be accepted until February 12 at newmarket.bidsandtenders.ca For more information, please contact the Town of Newmarket’s procurement department at 905-895-5193.
