iPadOS/iOS 13: New Intelligent Text Selection

Happy New Year <<First Name>>!

I am excited to share with you the first newsletter of the year (and decade.)

While thinking of what to write about, I wanted to choose a topic that applies to all iPad and iPhone users.

So, I decide to go back to the basics -- something I see people struggle with all the time. The struggle is not because of difficulty, but rather due to users just being unaware of how to correctly do it.

And the topic to kick off the new year and decade is... (drum roll please...)

How to select text on your iPad and/or iPhone with the new iPadOS and iOS 13 intelligent text selection gestures.

That being said...let's get to work!

How select text on your iPad or iPhone

Whether you are composing an email or taking notes (working in edit mode), the need to select text to format, cut, copy, and paste, drag and drop, or delete happens on a daily basis. Knowing how to use your device's intelligent text selection features will enhance your user experience.

So check out these three simple ways to improve your text selection efforts...
  1. How to quickly select a single word
    • When editing text (means you see a flashing insertion point), simply select a word by double tapping it with one finger.
    • Alternatively, you can just tap and hold on a word to select it.

  2. How to quickly select a sentence
    • If you have already double tapped a word to select it, you can double tap that same word again, and the sentence that word is in will be selected.
    • Otherwise, triple tap with one finger anywhere in a sentence to select that sentence.

  3. How to quickly select a whole paragraph
    • If you already have a sentence selected, simply double tap with one finger on that sentence, and the paragraph that sentence lives in will be selected.
    • Otherwise, tap four times with one finger inside a paragraph to select the whole paragraph.
Tip: Once you have selected a word, sentence, or paragraph, swipe left or right near the beginning or end of the highlighted text to select more text or reduce the selection to the left or right.

Keep in mind, tapping to select text will only work when you are in edit mode. If you are wanting to select non editable text (from a web page or pdf file), you'll need press and hold down on a word. Then, swipe left or right near the beginning or end of the highlighted word to select more text.

Finally, open the Notes app on your device, type a quick paragraph, and play around with these text selecting tips.
