'Engineering' Themed AV Shows
London 3D Meeting - Saturday 11 Jan 2020

Come along to St Pancras Church Hall near Euston station this Saturday 11th January 2020 and watch audio-visual shows from the Society's best show-builders.  This year the theme is "Engineering", and it will be interesting to find out how members have chosen to interpret this topic. Doors open 2pm for 2:30pm start.

Rebuilding a Telescope

The shows relate to a whole variety of engineering related subjects: rebuilding a telescope, abandoned engineering, paper engineering, engineering of packaging and military vehicles.

Trevithick

Others will show us railway engineering, engineering in the insect kingdom, model engineering, canal engineering, ingenious tree felling, mining engineering and more are amongst the topics some of our show-makers have chosen.

Why not come along and enjoy a couple of hours of great 3D entertainment and talk to some of the creators.

Mike Hillyard.

Doors open at 2pm for a 2:30pm start, finishing by 5pm.
Entrance: £5.00 including refreshments. First time visitors free.

Held at St Pancras Church Hall, Lancing Street, Camden, NW1 1NA off Eversholt Street opposite east side of Euston Station.
See web site for further details.

ProShow Producer and ProShow Gold
Photodex is Shutting Down

Many members have used ProShow software to make their digital slide shows and videos, you will be sad to hear that Photodex Corporation is closing on 31 January 2020. After this date, you will no longer be able to access the Photodex website, technical support, or online services.

You can continue to use ProShow desktop software indefinitely. You will still be able to install, activate, and use ProShow Gold and ProShow Producer.

Make sure you have the necessary installation software and registration keys in case you need to install it again on a new computer in the future. See their announcement for details of how to get reminder emails and downloads before the end of the month.

Services within ProShow that rely on Photodex servers will cease to function on January 31, 2020. This includes the music library and downloadable extras.

While they recommend a new compatible product many members have migrated away from ProShow over the last few years and started using either CyberLink PowerDirector or Magix which along with some other software understand the concept of 3D and make it very easy to handle left and right images - where as with ProShow we always had to do it all manually as a side by side 3D image in a 2D program.  These other programs make pans and zooms very easy in comparison to ProShow and handles things like MPO files and 3D video files without pre-conversion.

BBC iPlayer - The Repair Shop
Series 3: Episode 12 - Holmes Stereoscope
BBC Repair Show Holmes Stereoscope

The Repair Shop on BBC Television recently repaired a Holmes Stereoscope. While not a particularly rare or valuable item in monetary terms it was nice to see a broken one being cherished and brought back to full working order and appreciated by the owners. The explanation of stereoscopy was also quite nicely done. The screen grab here is before the repair to replace the handle.  The card holder also needed attention. They even made a modern card of the Repair Pair shop team.
You can watch it on BBC iPlayer - Series 3 : Episode 12

I have since been contacted by a member who was on series 2 episode 17 and had Brenton and Will repair their Brewster stereoscope, unfortunately no longer on iPlayer - but no doubt due for a repeat on BBC or Quest.

Former member Brian Newbound has a 6’ by 4’ 6’’ Harkness Spectral 200 silver screen for sale. The surface is in good useable condition and the other parts are in excellent condition. The screen is a smaller version of that used in London meetings and some Conventions. It is a convenient size for transporting and doing shows, or would make a great home 3D theatre.

Support for Windows 7 ends Tuesday

If you have a computer running Windows 7, Microsoft officially stops support for Windows 7 on Tuesday - 14 January 2020.

Your computer will still function but Microsoft will no longer provide the following:

  • Technical support for any issues
  • Software updates
  • Security updates or fixes

While you could continue to use your PC running Windows 7, without continued software and security updates, it will be at greater risk for viruses and malware.

Microsoft recommend "the best way for you to stay secure is on Windows 10. And the best way to experience Windows 10 is on a new PC. While it is possible to install Windows 10 on your older device, it is not recommended."

You may want to make sure you have downloaded the latest updates before support is removed next week, especially if you have an old computer you haven't used for a while. If you use your computer as a stand alone photography or projection PC and it never goes near the internet then not a lot will change for you and you will continue to have negligible risk.

You could continue to use your Windows 7 computer on the internet for quite a long time, but the risks of vulnerabilities will increase and you will start to find other programs will drop support for Windows 7 and no longer update, leaving you on old versions that don't have new features or security.

My main recommendation is to take regular backups of files on external drives,
then you can always start again.
