HAPPY NEW YEAR
Best wishes for a Happy New Year! May Jesus, the Prince of Peace, fill our hearts, our homes, our school, our community and our world. God bless you all!
January is traditionally the month of the Holy Family: Jesus, Mary and Joseph. They are our model of a real family who worked hard at all the “usual” family activities and who were always open to the grace of God. Like them, we are called to live holy lives. While none of us would profess to be the perfect family, with the help of the sacraments and by the living the 10 Commandments, we can try to strengthen our own family ties and build our faith community at home. As our own family grows in holiness, we are enabled to reach out to the larger family of God who also needs our love and care.
Let us pray that the year 2020 will be a grace-filled one for all of us!
Our Virtue Focus for the month of January - Self-Control
During this month of January, we celebrate the virtue of self-control. Self-control helps us to resist the temptation to do something that we will regret. It also helps us to resist the temptation to do something that will harm ourselves or others. Each time you exercise self-control you grow stronger in the Lord and invite peace to settle over life as you avoid any guilt you may feel from having made a poor decision.
Show me your ways, O Lord, and teach me your paths. -- St. Francis de Sales
A person with self-control.....
† is patient
† knows how to wait his or her turn
† can calm him or herself down and think before reacting to situations
† knows how to avoid physical aggression (hitting, kicking, pushing, etc.)
† can think things through
† applies effective communication, decision making, problem-solving & resource management skills
Let us pray for the virtue of self-control so that we will resist the temptation to cause harm to ourselves or to others around us. AMEN

FROM YOUR STUDENT LEADERSHIP TEAM
Dear St. Michael’s Community
On behalf of the Student Leadership Team, we would like to thank you for your kind support and generosity. The Student Leadership Team is a group of students that raises money for our community and strives to live out our Catholic faith. We aim to educate, inspire, and help our school and the community around us. Due to all the families who generously donated to our special fundraisers, we have raised $1,706 so far this year! The proceeds are going to Monsignor Rossi’s food bank and Catholic charities such as Chalice. In December we raised over $482.00 for this organization. Some of our fundraisers include non uniform days, such as Christmas Crazy and Freezie sales. We also produce educational presentations and seek out opportunities for serving others. Some of our members have spent their free time picking up garbage around our school. Coming up on
January 24th is our
hot chocolate sale, which we hope will be a great success. Once again, we would like to thank you all for your continued support. We hope to see you at our hot chocolate sale soon!
Sincerely,
Anthony Podogiros Arreaga and Mario Alessandro Lodato (Grade 7 Students)

PREPARING FOR THE WEATHER
Although the weather forecast isn’t always accurate, snow is in the forecast and could be expected during these cold, winter days. When it snows on a school day, please follow this procedure:
- Tune in to CKNW AM 980 on the radio for information regarding any school closure. Information can also be found on their web site, www.cknw.com or on our website www.stmichaelschool.ca. In the case of inclement weather in the morning, closures are usually reported every ten to fifteen minutes.
- The class phoning parents will phone all the families by 8:00 a.m. to ensure that everyone is informed of the closure. Please do not tie up the school and parish telephone lines by trying to call these offices.
- The radio station WILL NOT announce if the school is open; therefore, if you DO NOT hear the name of the school then the school is open and/or if you do not receive a call from your class phoning parent then the school is open.
- As traveling conditions vary depending on where you live, please use your own judgment regarding sending your child to school.
- The staff will always work to keep the school open when safety is not in question.
- Please remind your child/ren to wear clothing appropriate for the weather, (i.e. boots, warm jacket, mitts, toques). If weather conditions are reasonable, students will go outside to get some fresh air during recess and lunch breaks.
Thought of the week…
The Work of Christmas Begins
When the carols have been stilled,
When the star-topped tree is taken down,
When family and friends are gone home,
When we are back to our schedules
The work of Christmas begins:
To welcome the refugee,
To heal a broken planet,
To feed the hungry,
To build bridges of trust, not walls of fear,
To share our gifts,
To seek justice and peace for all people,
To bring Christ’s light to the world.
- by Michael Dougherty, a variation on Howard Thurman’s ‘When the Song of the Angels is Stilled’
