Dear Saints,

As early January prompts us back into our rhythms and routines, and often with renewed energy and interest around personal development, we have a number of new things happening at All Saints that nurture the spirit and deepen a sense of community. (You can find more information on all of these, below.)

  • First, I’m excited to share that on Wednesdays we are going to be adding a noon Eucharist, which will be followed by a time for lunch and fellowship. In addition, our Weekday Bible Study is itself moving to Wednesday, and will take place at 10:30am, ending in time for the noon service. They will begin with a new study using the text, “Bible Women: All Their Words and Why they Matter.” It’s a great time to join the discussion, and all are welcome to be part.
  •
  • This Sunday, we will begin a new Adult Forum series, entitled “Biblical Literature: Foreign, Familiar, Formative”. It will explore the ways in which the Bible is simultaneously distant from our modern sensibilities, recognizable as an artifact of culture, and necessary to our lives of faith. It will be a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the Bible and deepen our understanding of how we interpret it.
  •
  • Finally, our Social Justice & Advocacy committee will be launching its focus groups, centering around different issues and topics, this Sunday at 11:45am.

As you know, this new year has sadly been marked by heightened international conflict and tragedy. I want to say how thankful I am for the All Saints community stepping up to host the Prayer Vigil for Peace this last Monday night. It was an incredibly powerful gathering of people of different faiths and Christian traditions sharing a desire for peace and unity. It also came together in less than 48 hours, so apologies if not everyone was aware of its occurrence! The positive response from the wider community has been overwhelmingly positive, and for so many, myself included, it was just what was needed. I am looking forward to us developing further partnerships with those gathered in peace-making, justice-seeking, and hope-building in Portland. You can find a link to the news coverage of the event below.

In this season of Epiphany, keep kindling the light and letting your lights shine.

In peace,

The Rev. Andria Skornik

An Interfaith Gathering to Pray for Peace
January 6, 2020
Blessed are the peacemakers: All Saints Episcopal Church hosted an interfaith candlelit service  as people gathered to pray for peace. Over 100 prayerful protesters, including over 25 faith leaders, gathered at All Saints Episcopal Church to pray for peace in our world. Along with Mother Andria, other faith leaders at this gathering were Leroy Barber of The Voices Project, Alli Dahlgren of Imago Dei, Adam Phillips from Christ Church PDX, Portland Mennonite staff, Jan Elfers of Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon, Wajdi Said of Muslim Educational Trust, Rick McKinley of Imago Dei, Martha Wood of West Hills Friends, Rabbi Benjamin BarnettImam from Havurah Shalom, the Rev. Matthew David Morris of St. Michaels and All Angels, Imam Abdulah Polovina from Bosniaks Educational and Cultural Organization, Mark Knutson of Augustana Lutheran, and more.

For many, this was a balm during these troubled times. "May peace, and peace, and peace be everywhere." This is our prayer. The vigil was just one of many held at places of worship around the country, as well as in front of the White House.

You can watch the news reports here and here.

A Celebration of Life:  The service for Craig Gibson will be held on Friday, January 24, 3 pm, at All Saints Episcopal Church in Portland. A reception and opportunity to share memories of Craig with friends and family will follow at the church. All Saints is located at 4033 SE Woodstock Blvd., Portland 97202.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are being established to help with post-high school plans for Thomas Gibson, and to help Portland area music students reach their goals.
Adult Forum Series - “Biblical Literature: Foreign, Familiar, Formative”: Join us for an introductory series on the Bible, exploring the ways in which the Bible is simultaneously distant from our modern sensibilities, recognizable as an artifact of culture, and necessary to our lives of faith. We aim to tackle issues such as how many bibles are there, what’s in the Bible, what do we mean by inspiration, how is the Bible formed, etc. Adult Forum begins every Sunday at 9:15 AM in the Parish Hall. Childcare is available. Grab some coffee and join the conversation!
Weekday Bible Study: We are now holding Bible Study on Wednesday’s at 10:30am in the Guild Room. We will be using the text published by Forward Movement, “Bible Women: All Their Words and Why they Matter” by Lindsay Hardin Freeman. As before, the bible study is now open to both men and women. Join us!

Wednesday Service with Eucharist: We are happy to announce that beginning on Wednesday January 15, 2020, a weekly noon Eucharistic service will be offered in the All Saints chapel. Immediately following the service, we will gather for a brown bag lunch for a time of fellowship in the parish hall.

Daughters of the King: We will meet Sunday, January 12th, at 9:30am in Guild Room. Please join us!
Social Justice and Advocacy Meeting: Jan 12: Our committee will plan to meet in the Parish Hall at 11:45 on the second Sunday of each month, starting Sunday, January 12th. At our January meeting we will break into sub-committees to work on our next steps around Climate Justice, Housing + Food Insecurity, Criminal Justice Reform, and Racial Justice. All are welcome to attend. For more info, email priest@allsaintspdx.org.
Welcoming Children in Worship: In the last year we have been fortunate to welcome a number of new children and young families and introduce a new soft space that has been well received.  As part of this ongoing conversation and aspiration, if you have any ideas or concerns about how we continue to welcome children in worship,  please reach out to Rev. Andria.
Parish-Wide Dinner Party January 17th or 18th:  Six hosts will be hosting a dinner party of 8 to 10 parishioners on the evenings of January 17th and 18th. The host will provide the main dish and everyone else will fill in with appetizers, salads, sides, and dessert. Please email the church office if you would like to attend or let one of our clergy know.
All Saints Annual Meeting: Sunday, January 26, at 11:45 a.m. Please plan to join us for our Annual Meeting and a light lunch of salads and pasta. Please bring a salad to share if you can. All are welcome to attend. All members are encouraged to vote.
Candlemas: On Sunday, February 2, we will have a special Candlemas celebration. Candlemas is a day that commemorates the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple and when all the candles of the church are blessed. In the Godly Play classroom, the kids will learn about the holiday and eat crepes. Children are invited to wear their pajamas to church for a fun morning of pajamas, pancakes and prayers.
Crackin' Crab Feast: Get your tickets now for the "Crackin Crab Feast!" at  All Saints on Saturday, Feb. 8th. Two seatings are available: 4:45 p.m. and 7 p.m. The annual event has been a huge hit for those who love crab and like to have a good time with family and friends. A bargain at $40, the meal comes with fresh crab, salad and bread, and a cash bar is available. Children under 6 eat free; children 6-11 mac & cheese for $10; and vegan options for all. Childcare available at first seating. Table pricing for 6, 8 and 10 people. All proceeds support All Saints outreach ministries. For tickets or more info, go to www.allsaintspdx.org or call 916-202-7132.
Hot Meals Volunteers Needed: We need volunteers for the 5th Saturday Hot Meals Program. At this time, we have a couple who are willing to be the cooks, but we still need two dishwashers and six people for set up and cleanup. Please let Nancy Patrick or the church office know if you can help. Thank you.
Mustard Seed News: The Mustard Seed & Book Nook remains closed until Jan 17th. Thank you for all your donations of time talent and merchandise, they are greatly appreciated.

In the meantime, we are looking for volunteers willing to commit to one Saturday a month for 2 to 4 hours, especially the 3rd and 4th Saturdays of the month and "vacation" coverage for Fridays so "on call".

Duties include: being cashier, sorting and pricing, general tidying and having a good time with your other volunteers. On Saturdays, our Hot Meals guest can be rambunctious, but they are also looking for assistance at the St. Francis Closet, a listening ear, some general pleasant social interactions and weekly check-ins with us. This is also true of our regular customers, they come for the social interaction as well as the bargain shopping.  We train you for any of these tasks as we all started as beginners. Men and women welcome.

Are you a carpenter?  Would you be willing to construct some "Powell's bookstore like" bookshelves for the Mustard Seed & Book Nook? They need to be sturdy, wide at the base, tall, and able to be fastened to the wall to prevent being pulled over. We would like to rearrange some of our display areas and maximize our book shelving.  If interested, contact
Sonja.
Altar Flowers: The 2020 Flower Chart is now ready for your sign-ups on the bulletin board in the Parish Hall. Think now about when you have a birthday, anniversary, or special occasion you would like to celebrate. Suggested contribution: $40.
Social Justice & Advocacy Column
"The Peaceable Kingdom” by Edward Hicks
"In dangerous times like these we have to produce generations of dedicated, courageous, and creative contemplative activists who will join God to bring radical healing and change to this damaged world, before it’s too late. We need this movement—not someday, maybe, but right now, definitely."
- Brian McLaren

Affordable Housing Forum and Resource Fair: On January 30, all faith-based organizations in the City of Portland with interest in developing affordable housing on their property are invited to attend Expanding Opportunities for Affordable Housing: A Faith Forum and Resource Fair, cosponsored by Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon (EMO) and the City of Portland Bureau of Planning and Sustainability.

St Francis Closet:  Many thanks to those who have responded to my call for socks, blankets, and other things for the St. Francis Closet, a room in our church thrift store that provides clothing and other items for those in distress. Since many people have asked how to help with this ongoing need, here is a list of ways:

1.    Donate money and designate it for the “Deacon’s Discretionary Account” or “St. Francis Closet.”

2.    Donate clothing and other items: Used clothing you no longer wear. Soaps and shampoos from your latest hotel stay. Items from your last visit to the dentist. A tattered but warm blanket.

3.    Shop for items at your favorite thrift/discount/bargain store, even online. (Please ask Deacon Kathleen for suggestions.)

4.    Occasional help with simple mending.

5.    Assist safely “behind the scenes” in the St. Francis Closet as Kathleen waits on “customers” at the counter. Any amount of time on Saturdays, 11-3, is appreciated. (Great volunteer experience for students!)

6.    Tell others about the many outreach ministries at All Saints.

7.    Pray daily for the needy and all who care for them.

How to Help Neighbors in Distress:

If you see someone outside unsheltered whose life appears to be in danger or is in an apparent medical crisis, call 911. Otherwise, if you see someone about whom you are concerned, such as not being dressed for the weather conditions, call police non-emergency (503) 823-3333 and request a welfare check for that person.

To help someone find shelter and arrange transportation to shelter, please call 211.

People seeking to get warm on winter days when warming shelters are not open are welcome in government buildings that are open to the public, including, for example, libraries and community centers. Library hours are listed on Multnomah County Library’s
website. City community center information is listed here

During nights when severe weather has been declared, no one seeking shelter will be turned away.
