Resolution for a new year

2019 was a turbulent year. Public and voluntary services were forgotten or faced growing pressures on their finances, reputations and survival.

So for 2020 we've stepped up our mission of shaping strong, sustainable, well-run non-profit organisations led by confident, informed, capable leaders.

Healthy third and public sector organisations are the heart of a healthy, healing society. We must value and sustain them.

Sustainable leadership

The focus of this newsletter, and our work in 2020, is Sustainable Leadership.

We've been researching the topic for the last 12 months and are ready to share our findings in an exciting set of resources and programmes. Read on!
Sustainable leadership is a process of:

Developing system, organisational and individual capacity to enable leaders to emerge, evolve and flourish.
Our new Lasting Leadership Guide, to be published next month, identifies four elements of sustainable leadership:

Succession planning

Succession planning is part of an organisational approach to capacity building, shared ownership and delegation. It is not about identifying and grooming successors.

Lateral leadership

Lateral leadership involves people taking ownership, autonomy, and accountability regardless of their role or place in the hierarchy. This requires time, commitment from all levels, a willingness to change – and leaders being prepared to let go.

Next generation leaders

Making the sector attractive to emerging leaders is key to future sustainability. Young people and those from outside the sector want to step up, but creating more opportunities for entry and progression will make the sector more attractive.

Leadership as an equalities issue

Addressing inequalities needs sustained attention if the sector is to be truly equal and diverse. Organisations don’t set out to exclude potential leaders, but good intentions must be followed through into action. Sustainable leadership requires advocating for change, assigning resources and taking accountability for results.
