On November 5th, ACS announced the following newly elected national officers for 2020:

Board of Directors
Bryan Balazs, Ph.D., Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (retired), Livermore, California
Christina C. Bodurow, Ph.D., vice president of global regulatory affairs at IQVIA, Indianapolis
Lisa Houston, director at Petroleum Analyzer Co., Houston
Dorothy J. Phillips, Ph.D., retired chemist, Waters Corporation, Natick, Massachusetts
Our outgoing ACS President Bonnie Charpentier had this to say about the past year of the International Year of the Periodic Table (IYPT):
”As we approach the end of this international celebration, let’s consider how we can carry the connections and energy generated during IYPT forward into 2020 and well beyond. One global unifying focus is the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, the heart of which are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). During my travels this year, I’ve been impressed with the growing momentum of interest in the SDGs among our members, and with scientists and students all over the world. Consideration of the SDGs and the role chemistry can play in attaining the goals has produced lively discussions, and a rallying cry for scientists in applying their skills to address global challenges.
ACS is now using the SDGs as a focus for our formal partnerships with other scientific societies. They are also a useful focus for outreach to the public and Advocacy for chemistry and education, highlighting the transforming power of chemistry in improving people’s lives and caring for our planet. As Councilors, you can play a leading role in incorporating the SDGs into programming for your Sections and Divisions. You can find details about the SDGs at https://sustainabledevelopment.un.org/ “
